Hi guys, quick question here.

I'm booked with Air France from London City Airport this Friday to fly to Nuremberg for a trade show, and my return flight is on Monday.

My Boss that I was going to be flying with now has to drive to Nuremberg (we need to being about £5000 worth of product back in person), so I was going to go with him on the drive and fly back on my original itinerary.

We have called Air France who inform us that if I don't fly the Outbound part of my Itinerary, I won't be able to fly Inbound either?!

Is this a thing? Is this one of those airline policies where they say that you can't do it but it'll be fine anyway, or am I likely to turn up at Nuremberg Airport and not be allowed to fly?

It's common policy. If you don't take the outbound they will automatically cancel the inbound. All to do with differences in pricing of single and return fares. Single fares are sometimes more expensive than the return fare. It's done to stop you taking advantage of this price wise.

Common practice, however there has been a move on shorthaul flights to price one-way and most airlines do this nowadays. There are exceptions where you buy a return ticket over the weekend for example and it'll give you a lower fare as you are unlikely to be flying for business purposes over the weekend.

oh and don't forget the heavy snow that's forecast for Northern Europe and the UK for Sunday into Monday.

Yeah, just got back through that.
Thanks for the advice gents, we ended up driving there and back, no issues other than a little traffic outside Frankfurt, but big big delays on the way back because of the snow.

As much as I'd love to say that the German road-management is awesome in the snow, they got their asses firmly handed to them by the Netherlands.
Ice and slush and snow on the German side of the border, completely clear roads on the Netherlands side.

Journey there was about 12 and a half hours with traffic and stops, journey back was more like sixteen hours :(

they don't don't like to make it easy for you, however when they oversell a flight that's perfectly fine

Do they oversell in Europe or is it only the States where flights are oversold? I have often seen airlines at US airports ask for volunteers to delay flying for cash (and then bump people when they don't get enough volunteers), but I don't think I've ever seen it in Europe.

Very nearly got bumped on a BA flight back from Amsterdam would have taken the money if the next flight wasn't the following day!
