I installed FSX last night and cranked up the settings to max presuming my overclocked 6970 would be upto the job. How wrong was I? I can max out Crysis 2, Black ops... etc with frames ranging from 40-50 in Crysis 2 upto 100 in black ops.

FSX didn't want to peak above 20. Average being 17-18. What's going on lol?

The last time I played it I had a crappy gpu and wasn't expecting much, so what's really required to max the game out? quad sli?

FSX is ridiculous on hardware, it's obviously very good looking, but I can't help think it's not very well optomised anyway. With the nature of the game though, I've found 20 - 30 FPS playable, where I usually want at least 60 in other games.

FSX prefers a nvidia card i'm afraid and tbh the game is not gpu dependant, beyond that cpu and ram are king in FSX. Autogen is a real performance killer and should be configured accordingly. The game also does not take advantage of sli/crossfire configurations either, at all. A fast quad core and heaps of ram works wonders.

Google around for configuration changes to increase performance. Also make sure you have the service pack installed as I seem to remember performance was improved.

FSX + SLi/Crossfire = no :(

1) Turn down traffic
2) Turn down autogen a bit
2) Get the shader 3.0 mod from bojote (this improves fps quite a bit on ATI cards)
3) RUn you fsx.cfg file through this (http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html) (Remember to back up your stock fsx.cfg first!)
4) Clock your CPU as high as possible

This

It's much more cpu dependant than gpu. Clock the nuts off your kit and then tune your settings. It takes a while to learn what has the biggest perf hit, but AI traffic is the biggest. The steps above should double your frames while preserving the experience.

I get minimum 17 FPS on my rig with everything on max settings at 1920x1200 using add-on aircraft and scenery. Typically 30-40 FPS in most situations.

Best advice for FSX, is aim for a smooth a sim as possible and avoid becoming obsessed with the FPS counter.

12fps as smooth as the sim gets, works loads better than 60fps but with massive amounts of microstutter.

Are there mods for fsx that will makes things run smoother ie more fps without effecting quality much?

All great advice given here. I would also say turn down the water & light effects (lensing etc).

Moving traffic is a big one and so are clouds. Turn these down (or set traffic to zero if youre not fussed about that) and you will notice a big gain. Also lower the visibility when you fly. In the real world there is a haze and not the unrealistic FSX straight crystal-clear horizon.

i turn off autogen. Never been a particularly big fan of it. i usually have cars turned down fairly low as well.

everything else is turned up pretty much to the max - runs nicely enough for me, except when at heathrow with UT2 and heathrow xtreme on. Then it gets a bit choppy to say the least...

this is with a 4ghz phenom quad and a 5770 @ 1600x900

Hey i was having the same problem a few months back, firstly install all the service packs or acceleration expansion. Then enable preview dx10. Then google bojotes config or configurator and it will make an optimized config file. Then after that i tweaked around in game to find out what looks nice. Seems like a lot of work but in the end its worth it. I run at 5040x1050 between 30-45fps in cities and 70 over the sea. Still doesnt use much gpu though, just rapes the cpu :D
