Flirting with the idea of a new phone... but too expensive?!

I've been flirting with upgrading from my iphone 4 but the price of new top handsets / contracts is mental!!! £600 for a phone upfront or ~£60 a month are you freaking kidding me?!

Obviously there are diminishing returns with buying the most up to date tech, but are there phones (HTC M8 included) really worth this extra mega-dosh for the average bro or are they only for 1) legitimate gadget enthusiasts and 2) complete and utter chumps?

Struggling to find a reason to upgrade from my £12 a month SIM tbh.

Sell it to me!

Take a look at something like a Z3 Compact. Nice size, physically almost similar to your iPhone 4, but with a much bigger screen, expandable storage and a cracking battery!

As a rule of thumb if you have to ask then normally it means it's not for you I suppose. If you actually only use your phone as a phone and happy with the functions then there's little reason to upgrade to the latest tech. Got my mum an iPhone 5C a year ago and only function she used on that apart from call and text is WhatsApp and the camera so it's an overkill for her really.

Some of the biggest strides made over last few generations have been the camera improvements, which is an important feature to me. Other than that a smooth user experience a quality of the finish as it is something some of us hold in our hands often along with the screen quality that we look at daily too.

Depends what your needs and usage are. The age of phones with a 3.5" screen is long past.

You can get pretty good deals if you look around and know what you want. If you're happy with a 3.5" screen, then don't bother spending any more money.

Thanks for your replies - I appreciate your time :)

As far as I can tell, the biggest pro over the new phones is actually 4G capabilities. Unless you commute on a train or regularly as a passenger in a car and you are the world's most antisocial person, is there really much benefit in this? I gather that a lot of the speed increase actually comes from modern phones' abilities to load data faster onto the screen of the device rather than the download speed itself.

You are probably overthinking things, though without knowing your needs or usage patterns it's hard to say. If you just browse, 3G is fine (in my opinion). If you demand 4k streaming (unlikely given the age of your phone), then you'll need 4G. The iPhone 4 was a revolutionary phone when it came out and will still run smoothly enough. However, spend even a little bit of time on a phone with a larger screen and your eyes will beg you never to squint at a tiddler screen again.

If you use your phone a lot and rely on it to improve a boring part of your life (e.g. an hour commuting every day), then it's worth spending money to improve your experience. The Z3 Compact mentioned above gets excellent reviews, but there are phones for all requirements.

4G has made Web browsing excellent for me and I guess it has to do with the lower pings. Makes page loading feel snappy as if I were on good wifi.

And your old iPhone has big bezels. Theres lot more room for screen there which is where the Z3 compact compact. It's probably the best small phone.
