Hi guys

I need some help with my car. With the recent flooding we got caught out and the car has been standing in water to just below/ around the door sills for 3 days. I have had a look inside without opening the door and can see some water, but not "full" of water.

What is the best course of action with the insurance company? At this point I would quite like a payout as it is likely that there are going to be electrical problems down the line that I will have to either pay for, or battle the insurance company each time to prove it was flood related?

Any advice appreciated, this is a massive worry.

Don't blame you to be honest, it'll take ages to try in this weather, assuming it stops anytime soon, as well as the possibility of damp, smell & spores.

Ring your insurance and see what they recommend! However, if this weather is set for a while, would it be worth doing it so soon? Better to wait maybe? I know a car is needed but.....!

Call your dealer and they will be able to answer if the car will have problems after been flooded. Not sure 100% but some car have sensible electronic parts at the floor level.

Its a new shape Jag XK - they are already prone to electrical issues with the British build quality...

Ok so car is being wirtten off - but I have screwed up.

The MOT lapsed in December and it has a private plate. This means I can't transfer it off the car and now it wont pass the MOT ?

Any way I can get it off there?

It doesn't need an mot if it's sorn I don't think. Though expect your payout to reflect the fact a car without an mot has a much lower value.

The DVLA say an MOT certificate is needed for retention or transfer. It doesn't explicitly state it has to be a current one, but I think that is implied. The SORN exemption applies to VED rather than MOT.

What's stopping the Jag getting an MOT, unless it's so broken it won't even start?

Find someone with the same car
Stick your plates on it
Take their car for MOT
????
Profit

That's what my ex boss did with a desirable motorbike plate a few years ago when he picked up a project bike.

The plate is the least of your problems. Without a MOT an insurance company would only normally value the car as salvage.
