Allow me to elaborate a little.

Moved in 4ish months or so ago and everything is hunky dorey apart from one very niggling problem, in the front room the floor boards make one hell of a noise! I've never heard floorboards make such a noise, if I'm downstairs and the mrs is upstairs it is very loud! It's even quite loud when you're upstairs.
This issue extends onto the landing a little (but not in its entirety).
Two other bedrooms and bathroom are fine.
It sounds like a metal creaking but to be honest I can't be sure. :(
Aside from taking the carpet up there's not much I can do is there?
House is about 25yr old.

Thanks :)

If you are then whip it up and screw them down next to existing screws and watch for any pipes laid and notched in, then talc over and in the joints.

If you don't want to take the carpet up you could always go to the room underneath and take the ceiling down.

No, there is nothing you can do without lifting the carpet.

Badly fitted pipe work most likely, either too loose, not clipped, the pipes rattle, or too tight, always notice it when the boiler fires up, & when people walk on the floor.

Had it in the back bedroom, all I needed to do was screw down a few boards which were loose.

Only solution is up with the floorboards, might be lucky & only need to lift the ones lifted when heating was installed.

I've got this in two of our bedrooms, had to sort out the daughters room a couple of years ago and I decided it was quicker and easier to rip the lot out and put ply down, correctly spaced and screwed down. Not a squeak any more!

Ok thanks guys.

I'll be decorating htis room in the coming week or so so shall keep you updated.

Would it be better to just screw them down (checking for loose pipes and so forth before doing so) or replace with ply/new boards?

Might run some new cat cabling while I'm at it as the bedroom in question is going to be a spare room and pc room!

Edit: whats the purpose of the talc?

Depends on the state of the floorboards.

If they are anything like mine were after central heating was fitted, then replace floor with ply, chipboard.
I also got some rolls of 150mm insulation off Freecycle, & laid it between the joists at the same time.

Personally I'd go with ply rather than the interlocking chipboard as I found that over time the chipboard squeaks at the join, even when screwed down.

I also prefer ply, but unless you have help,it's very difficult carrying 8x4 18mm ply upstairs on your own.

Very true, I just measure up beforehand and get the timber yard to cut it to practical sizes first, only cost me £1 a cut so wasn't even worth not doing for me.
