Florida in August - Unbearable?

Hi all,

Just got back from a 3 week holiday to Florida and now planning our next trip back. However in order to fit with my wife’s work commitments (newly qualified teacher) we are limited to taking holidays during the school breaks. We are therefore looking to go back to Florida for 4 weeks during August 2007.

Our main concern is the weather. We have no problem with the heat – it was 94F whilst we were just over there and we (plus the 2 kids) loved it. I think temps during the summer are generally the same but it’s the humidity that worries me. Is it really that bad?

We are looking to stay the first 2 weeks on the Gulf Coast (Indian Rocks Beach) and the second two weeks in Orlando (US kids go back to school mid August so parks should be a bit quieter). We've done the theme parks to death during previous visits so the 2007 trip will be much less theme park orientated and more 'relaxation' based ie beaches, walks, fishing, canoeing etc.

Anyways I would be grateful for any advice/reports from anyone who has been there at this time on what we could expect weather wise during August. I realise that it would be prime hurricane season, however I’m prepared to accept this risk…..it’s the normal weather conditions that worry me a bit.

Thanks in advance.

I've been to Orlando in August before and it was scorching hot. The humidity is pretty bad for walking around Theme Parks all day but for chilling round beaches etc its not unbearable.

All depends on you really ;)
When I was in China, the temps were 40c with near 100% humidty, and I loved it, yet I know there were others who felt that it wasn't pleasant. Conversely, in Egypt, the temps were again at around 40c but with no humidty and most of the people who were on both trips felt it was more comfortable, but I preferred China!

Cheers

I've done last week in Jul first week in August and it was pretty hot. Not completey unbearable but we got to the shows in the Theme parks early to get the shaded spots in the afternoon.

Or get in the Splash zone at Seaworld that will cool you down :D

It is hot, but the humidity is not too bad. However the thunderstorms at night are amazing and normally rain a lot!

The thunderstorms are like no other I have seen. Even the rain is warm which is great :D

Check the 'severe weather' thread :p

The heat isn't unbearable but the queues might be, August is the busiest time of year.

All theme parks have the fast pass scheme for most rides, it means you really only have to queue for the shows, which often isn't too bad. Saying that, last time I went we spent an hour queuing to see "It's a Bug's Life" in 95 degree heat, 95% humidity, and no shade. That wasn't too pleasant.

Thanks for replies thus far.

I'm sure that the weather will be bearable for us. As mentioned we don't intend to do many theme parks and will be taking it easy most of the time - this will be our 6th trip so we've done the parks to death. However we will be doing Discovery Cove now that the kids are old enough (8 and 10) and competent swimmers.

Caught a cracking t-storm over Easter just gone.....you're right they are 10x better than over here. It was 3am in the morning and I was like a little kid jumping up and down. Somehow my son slept through it all and my wife didn't let me wake him up to see the show....boooooo

I was in Dubai early August last year, now that was unpleasantly hot , temp thingy at out hotel was reading 53C (127F ) , sea temp was 38C  :p

Yeah they have that but then you still have to queue to get the fast pass ticket and then queue in the fast pass line to get on the ride, if you go when it isn't very busy, like Jan-Apr or Oct-Early December then there is no need for the fast pass and the longest you wait is probably no more than 15 minutes.

I've been quite a few times in August when I was younger (due to not being able to go during school time), and it certainly is pretty humid, but I wouldn't say it was unbearable.

I'm going at the end of June this year, purely as it's a little cheaper for flights than school holiday times would be and as I'll have graduated I have no committments for a while - it'll be my 10th trip to Florida and I still can't wait :)
