Weird one here but it's vulgar and making me boke!

For the past few days my room has been full of tiny midgie(sp?) flies! You kill 3 on the walls and within minutes there's another 3 back!

The room is high up and there's no way an animal could've died under the floor boards or so on. Besides, they don't seem to be that type of fly!

I emptied the bins out, despite not having any food in there. I cleaned and hoovered out the room(despite doing this often) but to no avail.

I was working late last night, came in at 12, made myself toast and cheese and sat with it in bed. Stupid mistake. I nodded off and the plate was left with a couple of crusts on it! Woke up this morning and counted 11 of the little buggers on the ceiling and 4 of them on the toast! :( Yuck!

Not really sure what else to do, if I get a chance later I'll get a fly spray but I'm out of options. They can't come in the radiators? I got a new plant but they were never around it! Stuck it downstairs just incase, though.

edit: just to note, the toast thing doesn't happen often as I only work late once or twice a week.

Sounds like a load hatched recently somewhere and are slowly filtering out of wherever they're hiding.

In the back of the Mill where I work there were a few hundred like you described in one corner a few weeks back. They slowly died off and I haven't seen any since. Fly spray everywhere you can reach should sort it.

Are they small black flies? if so I had this very same problem a few weeks back and after some internet searching I was left the following to probable causes.

  • A plant pot with organic mulch in the soil that the flies eggs live in and hatch when brought into a warm climate - this was not the case as I have no plants in the house
  • An old potato - I thought this was a joke at first, but decided to have a look as it could not harm. What do you know downstairs behind the fridge I found an old potato that must have rolled under there a few months back and it was covered in the flies.
I know you say that the flies were upstairs but so were mine mainly in the bathroom and bedrooms.

Weird. I'm also having an issue with flies at the moment. I'm not sure where they are coming from, and have given my flat a clean and checked for any obvious causes but no luck.
I've taken to using a can of deodrant and a lighter when I see any of them though. They usually convene on my light shade in my living room, a short quick burst of flame sorts them out but doesn't singe the shade.

Possibly fruit flies?

They can multiply very quickly if you don't get the blighters!

Get some 'Raid Protector for flies, wasps and mosquitoes' spray. That'll do the trick.

Made me laugh :p

Just been to the shop and got a fly spray, I'll fill the room and leave it for 15 minutes!

I recently bought a bonsai tree but it doesn't have any fertiliser or anything, just soil?

Oh and yeah, they are tiny little buggers, not the kind I'd generally associate with rotting. Odd.

Do you have air vents in the room? That and the heat/light will attract them. Might be worth closing the vent, I know I've got some above my windows.
