Flying to Australia?

I wouldn't say there's point in stopping over. It'll screw you up completely if you're only stopping for one or two days. The jet lag on Australia isn't the easiest thing to cope with sometimes!

As others have said all possible routes are (assuming from London):

LHR - DUB
LHR - AUH
LHR - HKG
LHR - SIN
LHR - HND
LHR - KUL
LHR - BKK
LHR - DEL

Cheapest will probably be through AUH/DXB.

In terms of product, the top economy products are (supposedly) EK, SQ and BA.

What are you dates? I'll see what the cheapest I can find is.

Will be 7/9/14-20/5/14.

I've booked with Etihad now - less than £800 return with max of 22hr total flight both ways with change at Abu Dhabi. :)

Wow, going back in time to 20th May?

</pedant>

Nice, I'd like to go to Oz sometime. I hope that you have a good time. :)

:p

Thanks. I hope it will be too! :)

Might have to wait until tomorrow to rebook it in case I do it twice because they aren't instant....

Unfortunately Ethiad have 10-abreast in Y which is a bit of a cram! The A346 is better but still! I only really said it was a shame as it's almost impossible to miss an A380 on the way to SYD (especially given they go from LHR to SIN, DXB, KUL, HKG and then also onto SYD). Having said that, I still haven't managed to make my way on to one. My flights to SYD this summer are with BA who us the 777-300ER.

Since you've already booked it's a bit late but I would always recommend checking what aircraft your flying the a380 and 777 are big enough to make a difference to how easy it is to sleep. I didn't stop over and don't miss it. Excitement meant not really sleeping on the way out just napping but definitely agree with trying to get on aus time as soon as possible. You can lose a couple of days feeling grim if you don't. If I was doing it again any time soon I would try and start adjusting even before leaving by getting up super early on the day you leave. First you might be knackered enough to zone out on the plane also you are closer to oz time.
One other really minor thing, buy yourself a black out eye mask. It makes it tons easier to sleep. I can now also sleep with headphones in playing looped seascape tracks... It can be on real quiet and still drown out the ambient noise.

Sorry all - booked and paid now!
Boeing 777 to Abu Dhabi
Airbus A332 to Perth
A332 on both legs on way back

I've tried to pick aisle seats as I'm 6'1" so at least I will be uncomfortable but can stretch legs on occasion.

Thanks for everyone's help on this though - even little things like confirmation of an airline I had dismissed or the idea of an eye mask!

You could try and see if anyone at Etihad Guest (frequent flyer programme) can look on the system to see if you have a booking. They have a 24 hour UK number.

http://www.saynoto0870.com/companysearch.php has a couple of numbers for Etihad that may work.

Indeed. Cheapest seems to be Ethiad at £785. Shame it's 777 and A340 though!

I checked with my credit card company and they confirmed nothing would be processed so I was ok to book again but this time they have put and allowance on it for the £750 cost.

Most I've ever spent on a holiday and this was just flights!! lol

Got to book the car park next although for £200 it might be cheaper to get some to drop me off and pick me up and pay fuel and buy them dinner or something.

the leg of my flight to dubai wasn't sold out so i moved to a free row of seats and lay down for 7 hours. the dubai to adelaide leg (12 hours!) wasn't. i was in between a german lad and a latvian girl. not good.

btw. i saw your location is leicestershire. did you not look at flights from birmingham? was no difference in price between there and london airports for me and birmingham airport is 30 mins from me and not too far from you i assume compared to london. i flew with emirates 747 out a380 return

Double the cost each way from Birmingham and extra stop at Amsterdam each way too so 4hrs longer.

They were also on EY (?) jets as well which i was advised to avoid?

He is talking about Emirates, who will fly you direct to Dubai from Birmingham direct to connect with the Australia flight from there. No extra changes. Sounds like you've found some flights with KLM or a KLM Codeshare partner or something.

Or just get a train, Heathrow isn't exactly hard to get to without a car :p

Have you seen English trains!? I'd be scared what i catch when i sit down! :P

Absolutely disgusting compared to 40yr old trains from Czech Republic due to the respect they have over there! :)
