Flying with a tripod

It appears my tripod is too big to fit into any of the bags I have, do airlines allow them to be taken on as hand luggage? It's a pretty meaty weapon, you could quite easily batter someone to death with it, if you were that way inclined :p
 
I'm pretty sure you wont be allowed to take it in as hand luggage. I've checked a tripod in, naked (:eek:), as oversized luggage before. It was a cheapo £15 generic one, good job as it got broken in transit!
 
cant take it as hand luggage - when i travel with mine it goes into my suitcase!
 
I just bought some cheap and nasty second tripod purely for walkaround work. Cost all of £20 from a well known high st camera specialists and is so weedy that it'll only just support a 1D 70-200 combo with one of the legs to the front. Having said that, it's very small and light, easily fits in my camera bag and does actually do the job (just). Might be worth considering.
