Evening all, I have the opportunity to buy a car tomorrow from auction, either an 05 Focus LX Estate, 1.6TDCi with 66k Miles, or a 04 Mk5 2.0Tdi Golf 3 door with 77k miles. The Focus has FSH to 4k miles ago, don't know on the Golf but I suspect it'll be similar. Price wise the Focus will be about £35-37500 and the Golf about £5500. Both are in great, the Focus is pretty basic though while the Golf has really nice alloys and is fully colour coded.
I'll be using the car for work as well and will probably do about 15k miles a year. I appreciate that Petrol variants would be cheaper, but there are none about.

So, would I be daft to be considering the Focus against the more refined Golf? Or will the Focus and an extra £2k saved be the better option?

You will be paying a premium just because it's a Golf. If it were me i'd just spend the money on the Focus and have a holiday as well :D

*edit* From a quick look on PH You can get 03/4 plate more powerful, or just simply petrol focus' for ~4k, also. This would be an even better option :)

Fox, thats why I have my eye on these two, they were the best of the bunch I saw tonight. The Focus would be more practical in an agricultural sort of way, but having just been for a spin a friends 1.8T Golf its in a different league in refinement terms. Tough decision...

No, he's paying a premium for a better car with a bigger engine.
