Focus Point Selector Fires Flash

This is probably painfully obvious to most of you but when I have the flash attached to the 30D and press the focus point selector button (*) the flash fires.

What function does it serve? Apart from temporarily blinding unsuspecting photographers.
 
I think it's setting FEL. The ETTL preflash fires in order to work out the correct flash exposure for that area which will then be used for when you take the picture. I'm not 100% sure on that though.
