Focus ST broken turbo :(

i did, and registered and then I found out the technical area ie fauts etc you have to PAY to be a member of that area????

wtf!

In what way is it broken then if its still making boost and the car seems to drive ok? A funny sound could be anything, not necessarily turbo related.

or have I missed something

no not at all.. I'd started to think it might be the exhaust until this morning to be honest and I was having a sneaky think it might be an excuse for an upgrade!

Do it mate - Collins do a nice bolt on GT30 and tubular fannymould which will see you to 350 bhp :D

I broke my turbo saturday, properly. No boost, loads of smoke. Trust me if the turbo's broken, you'll know!!:o

This is actually where the LCR is designed well.

After shutoff, it continues to use the secondary waterpump to cool components down, well after the engine has shut off :)

So that, plus driving off boost for a mile or so = no problems :)

If its like my 2.0T was the water pump just circulates hot water around the engine to equalise temps. As the turbo wasnt water cooled it was no benefit to that.

does there seem to be a reason yours has had a lot of failures?

Was that to me? If so, yes, its a 23 year old Ford pushing a lot more bhp than stock! :o

Basically how I had it mapped means its really fun to drive but unfortunatley makes the turbo a consumable item, which has been, er, consumed. :( It was a lottery as to whether it would last 2k, 5k or 10k miles, and unfortunately I lost and its done 2k. :(

It runs a big boost spike (32 psi) in the midrange which gives it loads of torque and makes it pretty quick 30-70 (or so;)), which is fairly useful against like minded individuals who may like to mess around on quiet industrial estates at night between sets of roundabouts. ;)

It will be back with a bigger turbo, better inlet and more boost. It will be epic then, this is one with that spec making 453 bhp/417 lb ft.

Anyway, sorry gone a bit off topic there!

Why, are you on some sort of mission to make sure it costs you even more by realising a whole heap of depreciation by selling it just because it broke?

no I'd be planning on arguing my way into leaving the finance... one route would be to get a 2nd hand turbo fitted then give it back.. thats about £350 I reckon.

I guess partly there is principal too.. and I'm not exactly over the moon that they said it wasn't anything to worry about a couple of weeks ago whilst the turbo could have been delivering bits of itself into my engine... that hasn't filled me with confidence.

Basically i have my balloon payment coming up with a nicely timed bonus to cover it and I had planned to keep it, my comment was largely aimed at the fact they fix it and I keep it with a painful but acceptable contribution or I patch it back together and give it back and invest the bonus in something else.

Someone at work has done a bit of analysis on her own car thats got me thinking actually, this is paid for with a car allowance and she's been of much the same opnion as me that you get the car paid off and for the most part the allowance becomes salary (taking into account at some point, hopefully not before you change jobs you will need to buy another car)..

However, looking at her own servicing, depreciation, MOTs, repairs etc it actually works out about the same as putting the allowance all into a lease car.

Numbers didn't stack up mentally but seeing it all in black and white its a compelling argument, i had just hoped my focus could see me into the 80-90k mile bracket without any need for really major repairs :(

i remembered it being high spec when youd originally posted about getting it, but forgot it was c.450bhp. whenever i read a post about it it seems to giving you bad news. 32psi is lots of boost though. hope you have better luck with the new spec :thumbs up:

I find it hard to believe there was any heat in it at all given that it had been sat still for about 4 hours and the noise was there on startup and not by the time I'd done 20mph for 200M in 4th or something like that?

You'd be amazed at how hot turbos get in such a small space of time. I can run mine for about 20 seconds and the turbo/downpipe is too hot to touch.

When my baby T25 packed up it would boost absolutely fine but my god, did it smoke!! The T28 which replaced it (before I had it rebuilt) lost all boost but didn't smoke. There was massive play in the shaft!

does there seem to be a reason yours has had a lot of failures?

Thing is, it seems to be everything apart from the engine that seem to break on Chez's car. I remember when the actuator rod snapped... that was an aftermarket part and probably not that old either. 32psi is one hell of a boost level though :D
