Folder Location Problem

Hey,
I ahve Windows 7 RC installed currently and have my Pro retail version sat on a shelf ready for me to install it when I get a chance but currently just not had any free time to do it. I am using my free time to organise the files so when I do get around to it, I'll have a nice organised system.

When I first installed this system, I changed the path of the main folders such as Documents, Music, Pictures over to my D:\ drive. My username folder ie: "Neil" is sat on my D:\ drive just as I want it.

The problem is that some apps are still writing to C:\Users\Neil.

How can I force the system to tell these apps that the "Neil" folder resides on D:\?

Thanks

Strange shouldnt be doing that. Did you actually use the "move here" command when moving your personal file to your D drive?

Just that I have the exact same set up and everything which needs to be is moved to the d drive.

Note even if you move the personal folder windows still keeps some temp data and the application data on the c drive. It's hidden. If you need to move this then I think you need to do a hack on install.

Are you setting up the libraries to point to D drive too? Take out any references in them to the C drive "neil" folder and put D drive ones in.

isn't the easiest way just to do a junction mount point? this way the os doesn't need any changing and you get your data where you want.

edit upon reading it looks as though that feature ahs been phased out and vista / win7 now use a symbolic link which is better.

How do you do that then?

Wasn't there a way you could set up moving the users folder to another drive within the registry?

You have probably right clicked on each of these folders, and gone to the location tab and changed the default locations here.

It might be worth changing it in ther registry, but I don't think it will override some of the application.

What applications are still writing to the C:\Users directory?

I did this method of having my "Neil" folder on my D drive:

http://www.vista4beginners.com/Move-user-files-folders-to-another-partition

Folders currently sat in my C;\Users\Neil folder include:

.config
.mp3split-gtk
.Synkron
.VirtualBox
Contacts
Desktop
Tracing
.recently-used.xbel

The desktop folder seems to ahve shortcuts in it where I ahve said yes to creating a dekstop shortcut when installing some applications. I don;t see why this C "Neil" folder should even exist when I ahve told it to be on the D drive

OK, so at a guess, you followed the process in that link for everything but Contacts & Desktop. Which would answer why these are still located in C:\Users\neil.

The other fodlers are becuase you haven't actually moved your user profile (C:\Users\Neil) you have simply moved a couple of the folders within here (eg C:\Users\Neil\Documents or Pictures etc). Remember, you haven't actually moved your profile. Only certain folders within you Profile directory.

Like I said, there should be a registry entry you can alter so the you whole profile is moved to the D:\ driver, or wherever. This would then move the above locations to that location too.

Edit -check this article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=236621 and note theres a registry string here

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

[GUESSING MODE]I reckon in there will be a load of ID numbers, just look for whichever you want to move, and look further down there will be the directory listing of where your profile is located, change here, you may need to log into safe mode/another profile to actually change it if you're currently logged into that profile[/GUESSING MODE]

Thanks for that, I'll just let you know that the contacts folder was moved and that one I wrote above is completely empty and must ahve been made automatically somehow. The same with Desktop. My proper desktop folder resides on the D drive

So, in the pic below:

regedit.jpg

If I alter "ProfileImagePath" as the first thing I do when I do the reinstall to "D:\Users\Neil"

Then should that sort things out?

Would I ahve to manually redirect the Contacts, Desktop, Music, Document, Downloads etc folders as normal or not?
