Folding@home news 23rd - 30th May 2013

I installed server first (as you had issues with desktop) but didn't like it (and messed up the gnome installation) so I tries installing desktop over the top of it and it was fine. Used 12.04 using the installation guide from ubuntu (not H) then used the H installation script for FAH. Since swapping the memory to the blue slots my frame times are closer to 1m ppd

The fruits of getting one machine back up and running!

The room where my PC is has a south facing window with the sun blaring onto it all the time. Walking into the room after opening the door is like being hit in the face with a wall of hot air.

My overclocked (to its absolute limits) 660 stays below 62°C and my undervolted standard clock 460 stays below 75°C. Not folding on the CPU's at the moment, need to get my custom loop sorted.

So it could be worse, but I agree :p

Finally got the SR-2 up and running and now up to full speed. Been running at around 450k PPD for the last few days (thanks to these lovely 8900 WUs - long may they continue). Very disappointed with the SR-2 for a couple of reasons:
Firstly, I can only get 3 GPUs to work in it. If I put the 4th 670 in it, the whole machine slows down and becomes jittery with erratic CPU usage. I've tested all the 670s individually and all 4 slots in use individually with no issues at all. With 3 cards in, it runs beautifully; as soon as I put the 4th card in, it all goes wonky  I've had to put the 4th 670 in with the 690 in the gaming rig.
Secondly, the CPU performance is a huge disappointment. I thought with 16 cores at 3.4GHz I'd be getting awesome PPD. Instead, it's not even close to the performance from the 3770K (4.5GHz). I'm not sure whether it's a problem with my set-up or whether these E5620 Xeons are just pants. Either way, I'm not impressed :(

Anyway, enough whingeing from me. On a more positive note, I've passed the milestone 40 million barrier and stomped poor penfold at the same time. Milestone tiffy and a stomp on the same day can't be bad :D
Sadly, I only have one more stomp to go before I hit the brick wall that is the big three at the top. I should be overtaking Team Muck Spreader in the next week or so and then, that's as far as I go, unless I win the lottery. I might switch accounts when I reach 50 million. The Stan_Lite account is still available so I might just switch to that just so I can stomp people again :p Just had a look and I still have the passkey for it.

On the heat issues mentioned above. My living room was like an oven yesterday and i had to open all the windows to make it bearable. I didn't have any heat issues with my rigs but the air temperature in the living room was unpleasant to say the least. I'm off to work for 3 weeks today so I'm turning all the fans up full to ensure there are no issues while I'm away.

Thanks, as always, to dekez for the news and a warm Foldy type welcome to our solitary new member :)

FOLD ON TEAM 10 :D

Its not 16 cores though is it? Its quad cores with Hyperthreading, so 16 threads, but not all are full fat threads. Not sure what you are running underneath, but I know when I was running the SR-2 it needed 6 core/12 thread overclocked to 4.2Ghz or more to even make the cutoff for bigadv WU's

Not sure about the 4 card slowdown thing, not seen that before! IT could be memory? I know the new Beta client needs a full core for each GPU and windows needs to map the full memory of each card to system memory so you need at least 8GB of system memory for the 4 670's maybe thats whats causing the slow down. Did you track CPU and memory use whilst it was running?

Hmm.. might be memory settings, are you running the latest bios and are you using XMP memory settings? This thread might help: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=1273783&mpage=1

Any table, summary or other comparison chart that shows the output of cpu's and gpu's performance or do you just go off the ppd figure?

Thing is that it changes all the time depending on the work unit you get and how many cpu's you have, whether you are running 1 CPU or two CPU's etc etc etc

Thats why no-one has really done it.

Guess I'm just lucky too :D

Seven of the first ten gpu's have been sold. Once the next three have gone i'll be looking to offload another eight.

This should give me a significant amount of funds to start my next project.

Although I must admit the thought of a few titans, 780's and 770's has crossed my mind to take up the slack whilst I'm waiting ;)

Hospital in morning so will see how I feel after the op :O
