Folding@Home News 2nd - 8th April 2011

Thanks ;)

On a good note, one of the P2684's is done, heres hoping it doesn't get another one!!

Its all in jest though.

Looks like im going to be averaging about 10-14k ppd with the gts450 in a clocked up.

It doesnt seem as CPU hungry as some has said fermi is though.

Yay :D

Nice one R5GTT.. thats a impressive tiffe for sure :D

Good news is that while faffing around I discovered I had NUMA turned on which is a no-no when crunching on the SR-2 so that should hopefully boost output back to what it was before 6.34 came out.

Having said that I've got two P2684, one on the SR-2 and one on the 2600K now :(

So.. the P2684's are both done, 2600K is on an A3 WU for some reason

But Gemini is running a P6900 now, with NUMA turned off the difference is fairly dramatic.

Frame time dropped from around 00:14:15 to 00:11:55, so around 2 minutes avg.

Doesn't sound like much, but it equates to a PPD change from around 115K to 148-150K average. :D

Still on Windows tho :( Apparently Linux can drop even more minutes per frame pushing the output closer to 200K

Not up to BaBa's beastie but then that has 4 times as many real cores to play with :)

It would be interesting to see what a quad 6 core HT Xeon box does compared to the quad 12 core AMD

Eeek. I seem to have got a lot of 2684s recently and my output has dropped off the chart, gone from 50k ppd on my 2600k to around 32....darn. And Loudbob is still snapping at my heels.

What is BaBa running again to get nearly 400k PPD?

I'm suffering with my ppd at the minute. As well as my i7 machine that crunches bigadv 24/7, I was relying on bigadv's on a dual xeon mac pro. Unfortunately the OSX client hasn't been updated yet so no A5 for me and no bigadv.

Another problem I have is my GPU client causing my machine to come to a crawl for some reason. I'm not exactly sure what's caused it though. It's either recent windows updates or gfx drivers/cuda drivers.
I'm left now with only 300k per week instead of around 430k because of those two issues :(

I've toyed with the idea of running virtual box on osx but not sure which linux distro would be best. Probably just best waiting for the new client instead.

BaBa is running a quad G34 Opteron with 4 x 12 core Magny-Cours chips @ 2.5Ghz or thereabouts.

Heh.. and heres what you'd have to pay at todays money to build one if you were starting from scratch and didn't have access to some lucky ebay specials on cpus :)

All prices incl VAT for us mere mortals

OK basic hardware:

1 x Motherboard: £787.50
4 x Opteron 6164: £3732.05
16 x 2GB DDR3 Registered: £687.17

The new engineering samples i have from the bay cost less for all four than one of the 6176's i was running (total £525:D)

I chose the motherboard so i could run non-ecc ram so that also saved me some money:)

Ive also just upped the clocks between wu's to 2.8, then i get a 2684 for my troubles:(
On the plus side 2684 frame times are 7.40, hope to break 500k on 6901's

All gone long ago but will post a link later when i get home (cant get to ebay at work):D

Edit: link

Sorry for the lack of news, I've had a very hectic few days, should be fine for next week though :)

Was wondering if you were ok Mr dekez, am looking to start folding by the end of the week and congrats on your effort in crunching too :)

Cheers, yes everythings fine, I had a visitor so spent Friday + the weekend touring the sights of London!
