Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 17th August 2007

Sounds like you've set it up fine. Note your folding name doesn't have to match your PSN ID.

As ms9cw says, you get roughly 287 points per work unit and a work unit takes 7-8 hours.

Make sure you're folding with the latest PS3 client (v1.1) ; if your playstation firmware is up to date then you should be. :)
I think they've released v1.2 now - I saw something mentioned on the FCF forums earlier

Also there are some larger WUs being distributed now so if they are taking longer than the ~8hrs that we're used to then don't worry too much as long as it still seems to be making progress :)

Welcome to the team

I moved my PS3 today, and when I restarted it, sure enough, it said a new version was avaiable, I downloaded it, (v1.2) and it continued on crunching the WU.

[EDIT]
Re: 287 per wu ... Yep, that's what I'm getting consistently. at least with v1.1, will have to see what v1.2 brings to the table.

I have two questions:

1: what kind of extra hardware do we need to hold off those druggie pornstar dutch bicycle-riders? :D

2: Is a palomino XP2100 (266FSB) worth folding on ?

congrats to all, might come join/stomp ya :p

hehe

Yes, that's right. You also need to set the User ID to something that's unique to you (oweneades, for example), so that you can see yourself in the stats and in the weekly news bulletin produced by rich99million. A PS3 is very simple to set up for Folding, but one thing you have to remember is that, unlike on PCs, Folding is not a background activity. You can't play games and Fold at the same time. If you leave your PS3 on 24/7 it will complete roughly 3 WUs a day (each worth 287 points, giving a PPD of nearly 900).

Hope this helps. And, of course, ..... WELCOME ON BOARD!! :D

Thanks for that. It looks like I have set it up correctly. I have completed my first work unit which is good. I should be able to complete 1 WU a night leaving it on all night.

Cheers for the info guys.

I have an old machine which I donated to someone with something like that kind of "power" in it - it gets about 75PPD with most standard WUs :o
Even my trusty old XP1700s at 2GHz+ only chuck out 90ish PPD on most of the standard work around recently :(

That is better than nothing but with a C2D machine getting 1500-2000PPD with the SMP client you may feel like you're stationary (that the right spelling? I don't mean you'll feel like a paper-clip :p)

edit: regarding v1.2 on the PS3 there have been reports of a high pitched noise coming from the unit itself as soon as the advanced mode (bigger WUs) have been enabled - the noise goes away again as soon as Folding is stopped so it's definitely not mechanical damage at least.

My d-link router has always made a high pitched tone when running - never done any harm though it can be quite annoying if you tune into it :p
