Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 1st February 2007

Yeah there was an auction of posts, and the money went to charity.
He donated a lot of money and bought a lot of posts. :)

Yeh. There was a post count auction started by the legend, Von Smallhausen. Loads of members donated posts and people bid on them for various charities. One of the charities, Tommy's charity for premature babies, was pertinent to me at the time as my grand-niece was born 3 months premature shortly beforehand, so I bid on them and won - I think it was 56,333 posts. IIRC, there were 4 other winners.

Stan :)

Just wanted to tell you that i am still a single machine folder but am running the new SMP client now so im showing 5 cores. but only running 2! :)

Arrrrgh!

I just lost an SMP WU :( 89% all wasted!

I rebooted my machine, loaded Ubuntu and the first client started fine. Second one didn't because I have yet to work out how to start it as a service [BILLY!] so I started it manually using the fah5 script. Log shows a communications error between the core and the client and decided to delete the WU. Gits!

Dude re-run the installService script. It should install both CPU1 and CPU2 as services. I reinstalled Ubuntu this evening (my x64 XP partition crashed  ) and all I had to do to reinstall my folding folder as a service was to re-run the installService script.

I remember doing that the other day and it didn't work. So I decided to have a look in the init.d folder and see what was going on. I ran the folding script manually and the output told me that the script HAD recognised the second client folder, it just couldn't find the FaH script for that folder.

Copied the one in CPU1 over, tweaked the path in the file and hey presto :D

EDIT: Woo my PPD has reached 1.3K! I am a happy camper again! I have just borged me a 3.20GHz P4 so that should bring in some points. Judging by how much time this girl spends online her PC is on quite a lot. Next task is to get my E6400 friend to reinstall Folding@Home now he has finished installing Vista.

Fair increase in speed. SuperPi 1M is down to 27.922 (best time), frames down about 20-30 seconds (on p3025, gives about 1150 ppd now).

Nearly 1.4K PPD :D

As I mentioned the other day I got a new borg - a P4 3.2GHz - and now my mate has got F@H back on his E6400 machine. Not 100% certain he has installed it for both cores though. Still owts better than nowt :D
