Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 1st November 2007

I just realised I've been in the single cruncher league all week

As I've been polishing up the old s@h for the gauntlet.

Rich what do I do? Actually don't worry I won't be crunching any WU's next week as the gauntlet starts on Monday.

Takes no time to sort it so I have :p

Only done it temporarily so if there's you want back into it for later weeks let me know, best to post in the Single Crunchers thread which is usually kicking around pg1 or pg2

just started folding for this team...did it for another forum in the past then took a break. The family is on a budget so I only do it during the night and when Im using my puter to keep the power bill down.....
:) gurusan ***!

1 question. I will have a x1900gt for awhile until I can afford something like a 8800GT.

Is it better to have the x1900gt folding or my CPU? (Specs in sig)

And the x1900gt will be overclocked in a week once i get it under water.

C2D with SMP client would be best, then 1 standard client and 1 GPU client, then 2 standard clients.

Also much better for the electricity usage and heat dissipation to not use the gpu for folding when you can get better output (in points at least) from the SMP client.

The only thing you may have to watch out for - if only crunching part time - is the deadlines on SMP units. They are typically only 3 or 4 days, so it will be a balance between the power of the CPU you have against the time you have your PC crunching against these deadlines. If you miss the final deadline, you don't contribute any useful science (as they have to give the work out again to someone else) and you don't get any credit for the work.

If you are only crunching part time, you may have to fall back to the standard clients.

The only way to find out though is to give it a try.

Oh and by the way, thanks for the news Rich :D

doh - I'd completely forgotten about it not running 24/7 :o

So did I. ;)

His old xfm London shows are worth a look too if you can find them. They have lots of clips on the site but they're a bit tedious listening to 3-4 minutes at a time.
