Are you overstressing it or is it borked? Clearly you should RMA it if you're drawing less than 500W.
The watt-metre on the previous psu measured 200 max, and was found by reviews to be around 10% out, so i'm not drawing 500w. Also the old psu was much weaker and ran fine.

Could it be anything to do with dual 12v rails, as i keep hearing things about this and the ability of the tagans to separate them. I don't understand dual 12v rails fully. I thought they were joined in the psu to make one?

RMA *** i think.

See to display the letters you must break the sweary filter using your uber h4xx0r sk1ll5.

Uber h4xx0r sk1ll5 FТW!

Getting back on topic, switch back to the old one whilst the other is in the RMA process. Problem solved, most likely. If it turns out to be the rails issue, ask over in GH as there are hordes of PSU experts there.

I bought a harddisk silencer and a new seasonic s12-500 psu to complete my quest for silence so i can begin to run it overnight to fold. Its certainly pretty damn quiet now

Harddisk silencer??
What exactly is this. There are different methods of silencing are there not?
I'm interested, as now my machine is water cooled with a Hiper 580W Type R PSU all I can hear is rattle click rattle rattle click click whir cha cha cha. It's like a samba... I don't like samba, I want it to go away :D

It was a Nexus Drive-A-Way from a modding shop in scotland. Google Uk it to find it.

There are two types of harddisk noise, vibrational and airflow noise/spin noise.
To get rid of vibrational noise all you need are some good rubber gromits or some elastic to suspend the harddisk. For airflow noise you need an airtight box and some noise absorbing foam. SPCR will tell you all you need to know about drive suspension and general pc noise removal.

My mini review of the nexus drive-a-way:
Pros:
-Eliminates airborne noise
-Silent when not seeking (this was a wd raptor so other drives will be even quieter)
-Good build quality
-Airtight foam lined enclosure

Cons:
-Pricey
-Adds up to 10 degrees to drive temperature
-Very long. You need a big case if you want to hide it behind a front panel, otherwise its visible from the front.
-Vibrational noise reduction not as good as drive suspension with elastic (But airflow noise reduction is very good)
-Uses molex rather than sata power and i hate molex.
-Long length makes it difficult to fit a fan in front of it. (i managed but i have a big case).

Compared with other drive silencers its probably one of the best. Ocuk do one but theres no noise absorbtion foam. If you want a silent pc (and i mean silent) you will have to ditch the hyper type r and probably a few other things.

Why not buy a seasonic psu, mine is completely silent as i can't get it to switch on. Well they said it was silent...

So the website it says efficient cooling.
But it actually makes it hotter.

I have a Raptor too (love it too pieces) but it runs hotter than the maximum recommend temperature if I don't put a fan in front of it, so I'm to be cautious about enclosing it.

Sounds Like rubber gromets or elastic would be the best option is either one better than the other?

Elastic is better, and its easy to do and usually free.

My Raptor temps are ok because they were very low to begin with. I've always had low harddisk temps, although i only have a very slow pair of cm 120mm fans on front of them with very little airflow.
For the raptors, max is 55. One out the box runs at 30 ish, the one in the box runs at 40ish.

Yes, the drive a way does increase temperature. Its an airtight foam padded box , and generally what stops noise also traps heat.

Love raptors too. Proper harddirives.

Edit: Yes, samsungs are quiet, because they don't do anything.
I'm on a quest for silence and performance, and it can be done with good planning.

Haha. Yes they do...granted, its not the fastest drive, but the Samsung's performance isnt noticably worse than my Seagate...

I bet its noticebly slower than my raptor, or even my Hitachi T7k250.
Why compromise performance when you can have performance and silence?
All you need is a piece of elastic or some foam.

Wouldnt know, dont have either drive you mentioned.

As for the elastic, I'll try that...

The Spin-points are one of the quietest drives around at the moment.

WD reckon the raptors are good between 5°C to 55°C and I just don't like to push 55°C constantly. I have an 80mm fan in front which reduces the temps to around 30 - 40°C unfortunatly this fan is not controlled atm and is a tad noisey obviously :(

I need a 5.25" drive bay controller for 8 Fans I Have 6 120's and 2 80's.

I have a coolermaster aerogate 2.
Can't recomend it tbh. It looks nice and controls fans, but thats about it. I want one that can switch to temperature control. It even has temperature probes, and at a set temperature it will set corresponding fans to full speed, but no option of temp control.
If your not bothered about temp control (and no fan controllers seem to have it) Ocuk have it in stock atm.

Given the 5 year warranty on the raptors, i won't worry about mine unless it hits 45. As long as the data is backed up obviously, as the warranty won't get your data back.

You must have a big case. I have 5 120mm fans and my case is pretty big and pretty full. 80mm fans don't cut it for silence tbh because the silent ones have very poor airflow. I've binned all my 80's.

yes I'm sure it is a lot slower - especially than a raptor

can't say that a limiting factor for my computer is the speed of the hard-drive though  :p
guess it depends what you need it for really

I've always found harddisks to be a bottleneck, even with lots of ram.
Compared with the rest of the system they are very very slow. If the pc is just folding then it won't need a fast harddisk.

I hate harddisks. Can't wait for solid state become consumer friendly and affordable.

Solid state drive that uses light and fibre optic motherboards... yes please.

Loading large programs and games uses a lot of harddisk bandwidth.
Editing video thrashes harddisks to.

Currently considering,
2 Vantec Nexus NXP-205-BK Multi Fan Controller - Black (this is my main choice being only 3.5" and managing 18W per channel and only £11.69)
or 2 Akasa AK FC-03 Fan Controller Pro
or 2 Enermax UC-A8FATR4 Multifunctional Panel
or 2 Coolermaster Aerogate 2 Fan Controller - Black

I wouldn't waste money on 2 fan controllers. All you need are a couple of fan y cables, especially if the controller can do 18w per channel.

You may also be able to use speedfan with a couple of the fan headers on your board.

After being so negative about the cm aerogate 2, if all you want is basic fan control its great.

Yeah I just want to slow them down or speed them up as nescasary the 6 120's will all be running at the same speed. My case is huge but those 6 are actually outside the case on the radiator.

I'm still undecided as to wether it's worth the risk trying to make the 80mm hole in the front of my case 120mm instead, it's a tad difficult.

Well, still stuck here in Alexandria waiting to get on to the rig (should be Thursday).

I have managed to establish remote access to one of my rigs via logmein.com's free offer (1 PC only). I have it set up on my gaming rig which has EMIII and FahMon running on the desktop so I can see if there are any obvious problems with any of the rigs on the network at home.

It has already come in handy as I checked up on them the other day and noticed that the entertainment rig was not on. I phoned one of the guys who is happy to keep an eye on them and he happened to be in the flat at the time so he checked and he said the fans were running but the screen was blank so I got him to press the reset button and she fired up to the log in screen - so everything is hunky dory again :D

Thank you logmein.com.

Unfortunately the laptop, which is here with me, will have to be switched **f for tonight :o

In an attempt to relieve the boredom, some aliens have been taking a bit of a pasting on it but the game started crapping out on me earlier.
Once I'd re-booted, I checked the temps and the CPU was running at 70c  So I think it might be advisable to give it a night off before something melts :p

Stan :)
