Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 25th October 2007

fold on team 10 - a few problems this week but still 10k is not bad - should get my 200k tiffy this week!!

Welcome to all the new members

Luck has nothing to do with it mate :p

It's good to be back Folding. After I went to the other team, I moved house and had problems with uploading completed WUs, so I stopped Folding altogether. I've felt since then that something was missing.

I don't know what's changed with the network at home, but the problem seems to have gone now and I'm enjoying checking my stats at work and looking forward to getting home to tinker and get the most out of my rigs.

Started folding yesterday, I think everything is set up correctly - using Fahmon and the progress is going up so I guess all is good.

I take it my stats won't update untill I complete my first work unit, which is just under 2 days away.

yup spot on - welcome to the team :)

as for Stan - obviously the problems were due to having the wrong team number ;) :p

Sorry to clutter up your news thread but 1 question if I may.

What do the different colour lights mean in Fahmon - I guess green is all good. Red is the clients are not running, but what about amber, I ask as my client has gone to amber.

Amber means the current frame is either taking longer than expected - nothing to really worry about

edit: here's the official word on it
Orange/Yellow
The client seems to be inactive or in an unknown state. The former happens most of the time when the elapsed time since the last completed frame is too high (this happens if another process is using the processor). An unknown state occurs when FahMon does not have sufficient information to decide whether the client is running or not. Check the Messages Window to find out what is happening.

Thanks for the news Rich.
Emily continues to make strong progress at the hospital, we are hoping by the end of this week she will be able to walk unassisted and get home for the weekend. Thanks guys for your support. :)
Well Bigstan its great to have you back onboard, looks like youll be starting your farm up just in time. Im back at work on Monday so can only leave 2 quads running, should be enough to keep me on Whitestar's tail, but with your farm at full power and the half term holidays over, the teams output will leap back up.

A big welcome to all the foldy type people.
Tom. :)

Thanks for the welcome guys, however I have run into a slight problem which kinda defeats the point of folding.
When I run FoH on both cores my PC will just switch off after about 45 mins.
Not shutdown but just switch off like the power goes out. I don't get a "this system has recovered from a serious error" on reboot either.

Also it's not overclocked and the temps are fine.

So if nothing else FoH has let me know I have a unstable system, I'll continue to fold while im at the PC on 1 core, I think it estimates 95ppd? Is this even worth it?

I'll run Orthos for awhile also, see if that throws any errors up.

Edit.
Possibly the PSU simply can't take the load when the cores are @ 100%? There is a GTX in there also so it's gotta hurt a little. 520W OCZ Modstream so I would have thought it would be fine.

That PSU should be able to take the CPU with both cores folding, though F@H does have a habit of showing up even the tiniest problems with systems!

As for 95ppd, well that's up to you. If you care about the science, then it's worth it.

Good news about Emily Tom. I must confess to not knowing the full story, having been away for a bit but I'll have a bit of a search to save you explaining it again.

Edit: Found the post in question, must be a bit of a trying time for all concerned. I hope Emily keeps improving and can finish her studies without too much interruption :)

It's good to be back mate. The farm won't be as big as before as I won't be running the AMDs any more - not worth the extra leccy tbh but I should have 2 quads and 2 duos soonish and we'll see what happens after that. Money's a bit tight for a while so I can't see me building any more rigs for a few months but I may replace the duos with quads at some point since Q6600s are only pennies just now :D

Stan :)

That's fantastic news! Again, my thoughts are with her and I hope she continues to make good progress. :)
