Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 27th December 2007

The fact is there is no real incentive [other than arbitrary points].
It can be a pain to set up [especially if you want big points].
Eats electricity.
Has no real involvement.

Now I know there are probably arguments for all the above, but at the end of the day most people will see it exactly as I have written it. Most overclockers show off their achievements by benchtesting which is [usually] very quick to set up and gives almost instant results.

I think we should just count ourselves lucky we get the 3 or 4 new people a week as unless there is some big incentive I can't see team OcUK getting much larger, at least not in the short term and definitely not quickly enough to put us at an advantage over the other teams.

A rather negative view I know, but its the truth I tells ye!

Might not be able to stay Red in the EOC Stats much longer. The Quad which used to fold 24/7 is now my Games machine since the graphics card on my old Games machine has started playing up. This has meant moving the Quad PC to a warmer room and I've found the WinSMP client has become unstable. I would reduce the overclock on the machine to remedy this but the PC won't start if I attempt to make any change to the overclock settings in the BIOS. So now I've got 4 standard clients running at 50% to keep the temperature down. I suppose some crunching is better than no crunching at all, and I still have my other folders going (2 x WinSMP, 1 x Linux SMP & 2 PS3s). So don't expect Team ms9cw to be leaving the top ten just yet. :)

My X1900 always wedges in good and tight. Crap myself each time I take it out, as I put loads of pressure on it then BANG it suddenly comes free and I think "I've borked it this time for sure!"

I'm sure things will sort themselves out over the next couple of weeks. Don't forget we've got a few big farms that can't be on over the holiday, so that will be adding to the problem.

I should have everything up and running in the next week or so. So that should help a bit.

Another part of the problem of getting new people is that there are so many projects to choose from nowadays. I know folding is one of the more popular projects, but it seems that it just doesn't get people going like DC projects used to.

Anyways, like I said, I'm sure things will sort themselves out over the next few weeks.
