Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 27th September 2007

Thanks for the news as always :)

Slightly OT, but apologies to users of my sig service (FAHStat). After 4/5 years of having a server running in my bedroom 24/7 I've given in and 'decomissioned' it (silence is golden). Just in the process of rehosting FAHStat with a webhost atm, hope to have it back up and running within a day or two. Probably going to go with Vidahost.

Would someone be able to explain this to me, I have just upgraded to a quad and got it running at 3.6ghz stable :) However I just set it up like the guide that the top of the folding forum told me, just like my dual core but with 4 clients instead of 2. Is this correct or can I get more points with a different set up that I dont know about?

If you don't mind your clients a bit rough and ready and want the chance to earn silly points then you can use a Beta SMP client - this will use all 4 cores of your quad to work on a single high-performance WU concurrently (though people seem to run several instances still to squeeze every last drop out of the chip).

SiriusB's guide for the Linux SMP client (either native or via VMWare in Windows) is here or alternatively the Windows SMP FAQ is here

Thanks for the replies, I have just downloaded the beta SMP client for windows and got it up and running. There is just one client running at the moment, however It doesnt seem to say how many ppd I will get anywhere. I was using the normal text based console for windows before and it said 973 ppd.

How many SMP clients are other quad core users using at the same time? I see at the top of the single machine league the two quad core users are averaging around 3500 a day!

Does Linux give a significant advantage in folding points or do you just prefer it?

Just so I know when I have my set up right what PPD do you think I should be about getting with my quad core at 3.6ghz in windows?

The Linux SMP client generally bags more points. It also hardly ever fails/crashes/kills WUs, so there is hardly any folding downtime.

To be honest though, the WinSMP is far more stable these days so you should be able to get close to Linux SMP pointage. It is also far less hassle than Linux. :)

Thats what I was thinking!

Im starting to think I have made a complete balls up of setting this up and might start again :(

If I follow the guide at the top of the forum exactly and just use the SMP beta client instead of the text based console it suggests will I be alright?

Is the only way to remove what I have already done to delete the folders and registry entries as well as deleting the services?
