Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 3rd April 2008

oh right okay nice one, i'll sit back then!

Quad 6600 @ 3ghz and just set up a micro atx for me mum that i've only just finished and yet to take round her house, so it'd be rude not to overclock it slightly and run f@h - E2200 Duo @ 2.85Ghz.

I've got to find a way to reduce the temp on this machine a little to stop the arctic freezer7 fan on full tilt while running @ 3ghz, it's too noisy to leave on overnight. I'll try and reduce the voltage a bit and see if that works.

Hi stormduck

Welcome and I see you've found the F@H sig too :D

you might want to use the windows smp client - a little more involved to set up (read 3 minutes) but worth uber points. For your sanity and eardrums spend £30 and get a quality cooler for your quad (it's hot when running four cores)

well i've realised i can change the fan settings in the bios and raised them up so the fan turns on at 70c - not ideal and it still has to run with the fan on when all for cores are running to keep the temps between 60 - 65. I had no intention of O/Cing or running this thing when i specced the pc! What cooler would you recommend instead?

yeah, found the sig thing, well i spent long enough in the 'how to' guide!

smp client, oh blimey, there's more to learn!?

I've got winvnc running in vista x64 so i've hid me mum's pc which is sooooo quiet under the desk - it's lovely and warm sitting here with all these fans pumping out heat!

Yep what Cob said ^

Unfortunately the how to guide is a bit out of date so it doesn't get a mention - I think someone is working on a new one for the forums though everything is changing at quite a rate currently so it's a bit of a mission to stay on top of it :o

I have a Quad @ 3Ghz running between 35C and 55C at full load depending how cold it is in the conservatory. :D

I'd recommend the heatsink, but you might be able to find a quieter fan.

I'm using a Thermalright Ultima 90 heatsink with an Akasa Amber 92mm fan.
