I am a frequent forum reader and I often see 'spec me a folding box' threads.

Why on earth would anyone spend money on a computer, purely to run 24-7 and use up lots of electricity.
My ps3 has a folding option on it, I won't be leaving the ps3 on all the time to fold its loud! (Release console).

Is it just to compare folding numbers with other people?

This is not a dig/rant at people who fold, I am interested in the reasons for doing it:)

In all seriousness though, I would believe people are doing it for the advancement of science and humanity although the presence of points adds an element of competition which I'm sure encourages people to fold.

I fold because it makes it easier for things to fit into small spaces.

I fold if I don't have a good enough hand...

Seriously though, I think a lot of people do it because it's simply something to do with an old rig! Or if you leave your PC on 24/7 anyway, you may as well make the most of it!

a) For science, and b) because it's actually quite interesting and addictive if you're into geeky stuff. I tend to go in cycles, where for a month or two I get really into it and leave my PC on constantly, after which I get fed up with it and give it a break for a while.

I wouldn't build PCs just to fold, though. It's not so much the component price - you can build a decent folding rig for not much over £200. It's the leccy - each system can easily cost you a quid a day.

I hear BigStan spends a lot on his folding rigs. I wondered why he did it too, but I suppose if you have the money it could be fun.

Just depends what you enjoy really... no different to spending lots on gaming rigs, or fast cars, or musical instruments or anything else!

Electricity bills are horrible in this country, but if you look at the U.S.A., their bills are a lot cheaper, making it affordable to whatever proprotion of users choose to fold.

I think the "my computer is on all the time anyway, so I might as well make use of it" argument is flawed, as when CPUs are crunching at full load they use tonnes more leccy than when idle.

Because the people who fold either don't pay the electricity bills, or don't have anything else to spend their money on. Also it's a form of epeen extension.

I have to admit I first started folding to pee my landlord off. If he can take £700 per week per person for us 2 being here and fix FA (such as the shower has now been broken 13 weeks) then he can take a hit on his wallet from me using 1KWH constantly. But having read up about it, I now do it for the science :)
