Right, you all go on and on about foobar ( :p ) so i decided to give it a go..

So i've got it

Firstly,

anything i should want to setup in the settings? had a quick scan through but nothing leeps out at me.

And, everyone says its really good for plugins etc.

Well is there any that makes the libary viewer thing actualy any good?

also where do you get skins from? and how do you install them (and plugins)

The best, and most likely easiest "skins" will be from a plugin called UIPanels or PanelsUI. Its basically the mothership layout engine so to speak, you can download extra visual panels for it.

Its quite handy as you can just download config files and dump them in.

Hydrogen audio forums and wiki are very helpful.

Here is a thread that distributes .pui (panels ui config) files:

Generally people will tell you what other components and plugins you will need to get their config to run. Its a very DIY type of music player though, so you need patience.

That kind of covers skinning I suppose, not sure about a media library, I just use the standard one iirc.

Cheers, although that thread is full of out of date links and stuff, rather frustraighting. Will carry on looking through it see if i find anything that tickles my fancy and actualy works ! lol

I must admit, I set my foobar up on my own since the scripting language used to create the UIs is extremely easy to use if you are a programmer. I spent a good two weeks sifting through the wiki and forum for inspiration and not once did I really remember seeing some sort of new users guide that explained all the common stuff :(. A bit unfortunate really, and since it was a while ago my memory of decent pointers is somewhat diminished.

Its by far my favorite music player that I have used so far though (maybe its because I like things that I can customise) so definitely stick with it if you have the patience.

Edit:

To answer another question, there is a "components" folder in your foobar directory. Any components you download should most likely (with exception of a few) come as a single .dll file, close foobar, dump the .dll into that directory, open foobar and it will have installed its self. If its a display plugin you'll need to select it from the options.

Im really trying hard to stick with it but some things are putting me off, and its probably my own fault but:

There are WAY to many things in the context menu's everywhere, why does it have to be so over complicated :(

also i've yet to find a UI or skin or whatever its called that works properly - so i figured (excuse me if im totaly wrong) maybe im missing some plugins or compenents or whatever their called so i've downloaded and installed all the most popular ones which helped but still most the UI's are foobarred (ha irony! lol) in some manner :(

is there any other up to date resource other than that thread ?

That first post by dawxxx666 do I just need the config pack or do I need all of the components as well?

What is the mem usage of foobar like?

You need all the components as well.

Does it matter what the memory usage is? Not like you're running short is it :p If you must know, open and playing a FLAC it's usually using between 8MB and 20MB depending what I have going on. Minimized to my notification area it's sitting at around 2MB to 5MB :)

i've used foobar for years now but haven't bothered keeping up with the latest plugins. i'm still using an old config i made last year. i'm sure i've posted it before. :p
