Do you just crack on with eating from your local restaurants/take away's or do you pay attention to hygiene ratings. You can find yours at this site:

I never used to pay too much attention, but I have found one Chinese restaurant I certainly won't be using again until they buck up their ideas. Strangely, some of the places I thought looked clean are way below standard while some that look dirty, are very clean. Never judge a book by it's cover I suppose.

Yes, I found out my local indian takeaway was infact a 1! I immediately stopped using them and i'm sure plenty of other people did. They have since booked up their ideas and now have a 3 rating so I might try them again :)

The two places in my town I thought would be bad are, all others are pretty good, mind you, Borden which is just up the road and full of squaddies has got some shockers, reckon it's enemy action trying to put our lads out of action, either that or it's designed to toughen them up for overseas so they don't go getting dehli belly lol :)

Bah we get duff info up here as its a different scheme, just says if the place passed or improvement required. Mind you the only offenders locally were 2 big companies, Campanile hotel and the Subway in a big shopping centre.

Oops. Most of the places I like locally score poorly.
Obviously the bits the public can see are kept cleaner than the bits we can't - all of them look clean enough when you visit them.
The small craft bakery around the corner gets a 5 which is good as they're excellent.

Not sure if it will stop me going though - never had any problems after eating at any of them and they all serve decent grub.

Personally don't care. I've travelled to enough dirty countries to know what actual dirty cooking is like. Having said that I've just looked and most/all the places by me are a 5 anyway.

The only one I stopped going to was the kebab place in town that ended up on grime busters and it was rancid! Until then it was our go to place after a night out.

Just checked a few near me. I expected the takeaways to be bad, and they are. Some places have surprised me though and are worse than you would expect.

Ditto.

However, I seldom (I can count on 1 hand the number of times I go a year) go to any fast food joint or "cheap" quick/easy food stalls.

Also, past 1 and 2, aren't the other ratings essentially just for better admin? ie Food stickers, log books, training, health and safety etc? Hence why a lot of takeaways will be low because they'll be family run by a couple of people and therefore not a proper "business structure" in the eyes of the agency.

It's not just about how clean a place is its also about their practices in preparing and storing food. It really isn't difficult to get a high rating. Any place with a low rating really can't give a fig about what they are serving you IMHO

On the flip side, some day dots/food stickers, a log book of random food temp checks, and a certificate in food safety (which is a 1 day course) isn't that hard to put into practice.

could certainly be a big draw for a small business, to be able to say you have a 5 star hygene rating be it the only local place or one of x many local places to have so
