Far far away....
I have just been out with some friends for a meal and I sent my main course back.

Now this was only a pub but it was really poor. The starter was OK, a parsnip soup, for main I order Venison sausage with mash.

The mash was cold an lumpy and the sausage were tough and overcooked. Also the plate had not been cleaned, there were bits of mash on the edge as well as the sauce.

Would you have sent it back or would you have been "polite" and got on with it?

You do realise what chefs do when people complain about their food?

Seen it done, its not nice. :p

If you are paying good money for food and it was as bad as you described it then there's no problem in sending it back. I hate it when there's nothing wrong with it and people have it sent back.

I would ask for a refund, not a replacement tbh

Wouldn't eat anything after complaining and plate went back to kitchen

In a crappy restaurant I would be too scared to send food back, I'd just eat it.

If it was somewhere posh I would send it back, but they're less likely to give me crap food.

I would send something back if I didn't think it was worthy of the money I was paying i.e. If your sausage and mash was £3.50 from a stall vendor I probably wouldnt bother, but if im paying £20 for a steak and its not cooked as I asked I would.

Nonetheless, cold or inedible food is something I would certainly not expect to pay for / send back

Only complain at the end of a meal; this ensures the Chef cannot spike you. If it's been a dreadful experience then take your money elsewhere.

I complained after the very first taste of the mash, I turned down the offer of something else.

If it's poor, I will complain straight away or at the earliest possible opportunity. I'm not paying to eat rubbish food.
