Football....how boring

Played both. Played both Union and League far more than footy as a youngster.

Neither have any case to stand against footy. As a spectator sport OR to play yourself. Footy is the best sport ever.

I would, however, like you to back your case up and lets see if we can have an informed discussion regarding the plusses and minuses of both sports, we can then draw our own conclusions ;)

played over 800 proper games of football in my lie up until the age of 20 was a amateur footballer with possbilities

played 1 game of rugby

was agood winger scopred 3 tries in first gane

got sandwiched between three others all bigger than me and almost knocked unconcious

Rugby aint a sport its legalised violence

the end.

Stop stalking me Gilly ;)

Rugby :

Action - Excitement - Violence - Chasing a ball - lots of drinking down the pub afterwards

Football :

Chasing a ball - Very little violence - Lots of hooliganism

This is MY hangout! You're stalking me! :D

Rugby:

Lots of men grabbing each others privates. Lots of men rolling around together and having group hugs. Thuggery. Lack of skill. Egg chasing.

Football:

Passion, skill in abundance, brilliant spectator sport (the biggest in this country, if not the world!), an international language. No matter where I go, I will be able to find someone with a football and be able to enjoy something with them. No matter that I can't speak their language. If I move somewhere in this country - or any of the home countries, all I need to do is sign up for a local team and I have 16-17+ new friends. No egg chasing.

How can the entire world be wrong?

Actually Golf is the biggest game in this country and in the world. Something i personally find quite disturbing.

Rugby is actually a very highly skilled game. Each player has to know their job off by heart. There are more angles to it than Football. Ie Scrums/Throw-ins. And somehow i fail to see men running around hugging each other when im playing. Im seeing men being tackled to the ground, having their jaws/bones broken. Thuggery?! Skill....U want to know how to take a 18st man down when there charging towards you? Learn how to rugby tackle properly. They'll go down like a stone.

Football is nothing more than an excuse for highly paid Footballers going round thinking their special because they run around all day trying to avoid hurting each other. Anyone can kick a ball. Takes a lot more skill to kick/throw/pass a ball whilst all the time avoiding being tackled to the ground. See how fast you run when you have about 6 players chasing after you trying to take u down. Way more exhilarating and exciting than football. Especially where nowadays the majority of the 'skilled/best' players in this countries teams come from completely different countries. Real men play rugby. If u want to die of boredom, play football.

But like I said, I've experienced life on both sides of the fence.

Rugby doesn't have the same passion or commitment as football, nor does it have anywhere near the requirement of skill that football has. (And I don't believe for a second that golf is bigger than footy - I'm not doubting your word but I think whoever did the survey have cocked up).

Rugby - get the ball, run with it, fall over at a certain point.

Football - get the ball, you won't run the entire length of the pitch with it like you can in rugby without having to go past at least 6 or 7 players.

And I can tackle properly. I went from winger to number 8 2nd row to full-back. And I was never above 8 stone. So I needed to know exactly how to position myself to take down the bigger lads.

And you're saying that there's more players from different countries here in the top level playing rugby than there are in football? Are you joking?

  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • France
  • England (obviuosly)
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Ireland
  • Scotland
  • Norway
  • Finland
  • Sweden
  • South Africa
  • Nigeria
  • Trinidad & Tobago
  • Jamaica
  • USA
  • Columbia
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Northern Ireland

And they're the ones just off the top of my head. Still think rugby has more?

Ahh piffle. In the end it comes down to personal preference. Some prefer the mans sport (rugby) and others prefer football. My preference is obvious....foo...rugby. ;)

Take it you've given up on that tack then ;)

I guess it does come down to personal preference. And the majority of people choose footy over rugby, so obviously footy is the people's choice :D

And I'm fairly sure that when the slacker users that are in bed right now come back into the Sports forum, they'll mostly back me up saying footy is the best :D

Of course by saying Football is boring, youve technically called Rugby boring as well (as Rugby can be called football as well by the fuss pots)

You should have said Soccer or Association Football ;)

The point about the golf is, I think, that it's the biggest participation sport in the UK - i.e. those who play on a regular basis. I have no doubt that people watch more football than golf, but more actually play golf on a regular basis than those who play football.

Brilliantly summed up and lot of shirt lifters in the rugby circles I think.

I'm not a great expert on rugby, but have been to a couple of games during the World Cup, both at Twickenham and the atmosphere is non-existent when compared to a football match.

Rugby is a thugs game invented by some spoilt rich kid who was no good at kicking a ball, so grabbed it in desperation.

Look at the England Rugby team: full of players called "Will" or "Lawrence" what a bunch of snobs.

:D

Rugby is more of a mans game than football. Both rugby and football are great games, both require skill. You cant say rugby doesnt, u just dont get the ball and run the whole length of the field. It just aint possible all the time. You have to pass about to other players (just like football) and construct moves which breakdown the defence (again like footbal)

And would u calll lumu, martin jhonson, scott giibs shirt lifter?:p

oh and someone said about legalised thugary? uh no I dont think so, its just an organised game like football, fair enough there is fighting in rugby, but the same happens in football, and the holiganism is ridiculosr in football compared to rugby.

Also I think there is more passion in rugby in modern times than football (at the highest level) because footballers complain when they aint on at least 25k a week.

Take Neath RFC for example I think the higest wage is £80k a year? compare that to some footballers who get that a week

Sadly a lot of the arguments here are generalised, like the drinking afterwards > thuggery, or skill levels in both etc. Clearly there are different skill sets involved in both but I personally think Football requires the higher level of them. Wrt the various 'angles' of scrums etc, compared to free kicks, or throwins etc...well imo all that does is make the game of Rugby slower & even more boring to watch ;)

The fact that there is a HUGE amount of money in the game of football means at least 2 things in this particular discussion. 1) Just because they are paid lots does not mean that they lack skills on the pitch...it nearly always means the opposite, we do not have to watch a player debating his contract for more money & thus this cannot make the game more boring. 2) It proves that football is the bigger game...simple as that :)

Wrt the violence...what are we, cave men :p If you wish to see violence watch boxing or UFC, not a game where if a player gets injured they are out of the squad recovering & thus you don't get to see them...which is surely not the reason you support a team.
