They should be capable of playing a full 90 minutes every day with no side effects, lets face it, they do train nearly every day for hours.

You obviously don't run then or play football.

Even an elite athlete needs to rest for a couple of days after 90 minutes of running. A lot of their training isn't anywhere near as intensive as a competitive match will be.

Any athlete when performing at the peak of their capabilities for 90 minutes will require at least 1 day of complete rest to get back to full performance.

Playing 2 games in a week is no problem provided they don't need to do much physical training in between, maybe some light jogging, stretches and tactics, etc.

There is no way anyone could perform anywhere near their peak playing a competitive 90 minute match everyday.

It's the same reason why bodybuilders cannot work out the same part of their body everyday of the week. Muscles require at least 1-3 days of rest from intensive training.

Running in a straight line for 12k may not be that taxing however its not the same.

Of course they are very fit.

Ask a runner to twist and turn like a footballer whilst doing the same 12K and I bet their knees would be aching afterwards for a couple of days.

Also runners run at a steady pace, footballers have to increase and go full pelt on a whim.

It's impossible to directly compare the two. I can run 10K under an hour no problem on a treadmill. I doubt I could do 9K in an hours game of 5's.

I used to do Marathons and I'd be out every day for around 90 minutes so if I could do it I'm sure a very fit professional footballer is capable.
Stanley Matthews used to run around 7 miles to the Victoria Ground and back again after training all day and that was using inferior running shoes.
Part of Sally Gunnell's training was running something like 18 miles in a morning and 22 miles later that day, every day, so if a girly can do it I'm sure a big girly footballer could do a bit of that.

However I did say above that even though I could run Marathons, when I played 5 a side I'd be nackered after 10 minutes.
Post 51 if you missed it.

Footballers aren't marathon runners.

Have you ever seen an elite marathon runner strong enough to kick a ball at 50mph?

Could a marathon runner lift the same amount of weight ronaldo does?

Marathon runners have barely any muscle even in their legs, all their body requires is fat (energy) and very little muscle on them as it's just additional weight to a marathon runner and weight isn't what they need.

Same goes for tour de france their legs are stick thin, compare with a single gear rider like Chris Hoy who's legs are tree trunks. both are cyclists but one has legs 30inches thick the other about 12 inches thick. why do you think that is? both ride bikes but it's completely different type of cycling.

so you cannot compare a footballer only running 12k to a marathon runner running 50 miles, their bodies are built to do completely different things.

a pro footballer should be able to play 2 games in a week hell on a very busy week lets say 3 games within 8-9 days. they however could never ever play 3 games in 3 days at their peak competitive level, they could do it physically no issue but I bet they would all be playing like heskey on the third day because their muscles would be knackered.

This thread is brilliant for all the ridiculous comments. "I can do x and then do x again the next day so therefore a footballer should be able to play every day". Being a punter and playing at a lower level means that you know sweet FA about what the top level of a sport is like.

Running is a very simple activity that doesn't involve a huge number of skills like football does. Performing at 80% of maximum isn't acceptable for a top footballer whereas most amateur and a lot of professional athletes never perform at that level ever.

Which is why I have TWICE mentioned running marathons but nackered after 10 minutes playing 5 a side but Psycho refuses to acknowledge I said that.
However the average footballer runs/moves/sprints for around 6 miles during a game which for a £100,000 a week footballer should be easy peasy lemon squeezy.

I wasn't singling you out, there have just been various people who seem to think that the same fitness you would require for rugby or long distance running is the kind you would need to play football for 90 minutes.

I've just seen a cracking example of a footballer being a big girls blouse.
I've been watching Stoke v Southampton and Alderweireld gets pulled down and holds his right shoulder immediately.
Fair enough, he could have dislocated it but does he have to stay on the ground for 5 minutes and get carried off on a stretcher?
And yes, I had a dislocated shoulder over 2 years ago and it bloody hurt and I still have problems but my legs were OK.
