For the Z4 owners/knowledgeable types

The later engine also had shorter gears with a higher differential ratio, should put more effective torque to the wheels. Its a better engine having driven both.

..but not as good as the 3.4 Boxster S :D

I don't mind buying older if the miles are low.

Mines just hit 60k and had the big service (Inspection II), absolutely nothing needed doing to it :D

I've always been a little dodgy about buying cars with "high" mileage. But then I realised I was being silly.

I picked mine up... 53 plate 3.0i, 52k miles, black with red leather (upgraded new England leather), Carver upgrade 10 speaker + amp sound system, Sat-nav, cruise control, auto memory seats, xenons, 18" 108 style 5 spoke alloys, built in bluetooth system which is great and all opertated through the Sat-nav screen, for £10,500.

That was November 2008.

Im sure Im probably wasting my time trying to convince you that 25k plus mileage cars will be fine but its worth a try :p

IMO none of those cars are any better than mine, except for the mileage on the trip computer.

Mine is a very similar spec to mr tommos, I didn't get the bluetooth though :( and also found it was covered in tiny stone chips once I washed it a few times but other than that it is really really clean and drives very well. Just hit 50k in it and no issues.

I did need to change the transmission fluid though, that's one other thing that can sometimes need doing. If first to second is a bit notchy, it probably needs doing. Takes about 1/2 an hour to do.

I missed a 10K Z4 10 miles from where I live.. :( only caught the advert late.. and it disappeared the next day.. gutted..

Yeah the stone chips are really annoying, same with mine :( Respray is around £100 from a well respected garage around here so its not a huge problem.

Not seen transmission fluid change been mentioned before, is it something that I can so myself?

You still not got yourself one yet!? :(

Which of these looks the best?

One - posted earlier in the thread. 05, 13k ONO, 27k miles
Two - 04, 12,995, 15k miles
Three - 03, 11,985, 25k miles
Four - 53, 11,990, 25k miles (but red is my favourite colour! Both on cars and in general)

So yeah, that's the sorta choice I got. Bearing in mind I should get all my money back on the A3 (thanks to 2 front tyres which are 3k miles old), I could have a bit left. This would just be tapped over to house deposit money, so it's not a requirement to spend it all.

Thoughts? I've picked the lower mile examples for the older reg ones to keep them relatively comparable - I don't mind buying older if the miles are low.

Also, considering the 18 month age gap between the top and bottom, does that mean that Z4 residuals tend to hit a flat bottom just underneath 10k, providing they aren't ridiculous mileage? With that in mind would the older ones be a better option money-wise?

Anyone apart from smokedog got any thoughts on these?

The red one is an auto.

Did these come with Manual, Auto and SMG, or are Auto and SMG the same things on a BMW? What is the SMG like in the Z4, anything like it is in the M series cars as it is supposed to be very decent iirc.

£100 eh? That doesn't sound bad at all, I thought it would be a lot more!

Transmission fluid is pretty easy, just get the car up on ramps, it needs to be level though so all four wheels up. Then it's just a case of getting two bottle of transmission fluid (I used Royal Purple, it's ace) and undoing two bolts under the car to drain the old fluid and then refilling until it starts to overflow. You will want to get a hand pump of sorts to pump the new fluid in. If you want more info just add me on msn.

It made a MASSIVE difference to my gear changes, feels really slick.

HELP!

I'm in discussions with a bloke over the price of my car and a Z4. He seems to agree with my 12,500 valuation for my A3 and has this for trading:

3.0 Z4
Metallic Black
35k miles
18" polished split rims
Manual
FBMWSH (11k until next service - I'm guessing that's the expensive Inspection II?)
Bridgestones all round
Electric memory seats
Xenon lamps, etc.

However, he seems to think they are of similar value, whereas I'm inclined to disagree, based on a skimming of Autotrader and Pistonheads. You can't get a better deal on an 06 private S-Line in the country as far as I can see, whereas if I accept 45k miles rather than his 35k, I can get an 04 from an independent for just over 11k after discounts (like THIS one).

How much should I be realistically asking for on top of his car for mine? 1k?

What year is the Z4? 04? if it is, then you'd possibly want 500-1000 depending on spec, such as satnav, M sports seats, condition of the car in general?

The service is likely to be a cheaper Oil Service.

Yes it is an 04. Sorry, forgot to mention that.

I don't think it has any of those, will ask him now. Haven't viewed the car yet. He claims it's been a summer weekend toy for the last two summers, but anyone can say that.

I agree with Herminator. £500 to £1,000 depending on spec and condition.

The distance between MOTs will give you some idea how much he has used it, although not foolproof. See what he's lke when he takes you out in it too. If he lets it warm up etc. then perhaps it is more lkely he is an enthuisiast who has used it in the summers only.

Since the spec you've listed includes some non-standard equipment I guess he's listed all the options it has. Other options it might have missing that you could use as a negotiation tactic include:

Parking Distance Control
iPod connector
CD changer/Hi-Fi upgrade (carver I think was one of the options)
Wind deflector
Hard top
storage pack (basically nets in the footwell, boot and behind the seats)

Good luck.
