For those in Birmingham - what's this waste ground?

I recognise the cathedral in the OP's photo as it connects the Bullring/station area to Digbeth.

I just hope they don't bulldoze Digbeth as that's the dance capital of Birmingham. Been to many good nights there such as Godskitchen @ Sanctuary (now the Institute), Code/Air, Custard Factory, Rainbow Warehouse and Boxxed. Also Sundissential @ Sanctuary but other places as well such as DNA near New Street Station and Polysexual at the Dome II on Bristol Street. Nearly all of these places gone now but it's a sign of the times. If you went back 20 years though, then Birmingham was the best place for clubbing. The clubbing/dance scene is in desperate need of a bounce-back from the 2020-2021 disaster that was called covid-19. Trancecoda was the last decent event I went to, but I think they're now London-based.
Digbeth is being gentrified rather than bulldozed. I spent many a good night working the door of the custard factory.

What does gentrified mean in this context? I googled the word and it's saying things like restored, renovated, improvement, transformation, rebuilding, reconstruction, and also a change in character due to wealthier people moving into the area.

They probably wont bulldoze Digbeth as they are trying to push (or have pushed) all the clubs to that end from Broad st. Trying to turn Broad st into the Canary Wharf of the Midlands, moving the clubs, out of sight and out of mind.

Newcastle vs Birmingham...which is better?

There's only one way to find out...(Harry Hill) FIGHT :p

Having lived in both, albeit briefly....Newcastle, by a country mile. Spent six months there working on cleaning up the Northern Rock mess back in 2009. Loved it, great city.

Seems several people

Pretty much this - I haven't been there for a couple of years thanks to covid, but last time I was there were quite a few trendy bars and art galleries :p

Old Rag markets/Fish Markets - Until recently, was a fair ground sat there for the last 12 months months or perhaps longer.

The Custard factory is all now art galleries/installations and little independent shops. There's a lot of street food/independent food places popping up. It's basically less Burger boys/Johnsons and drug deals and more blokes with beards selling you fancy burgers.

Cheers guys.

I also just found out that the Air nightclub (home of Godskitchen) is now a bar/restaurant.

Yup :(

Have many fond memories of pulling all-nighters in there and then sitting in New Street at 6am on a Sunday morning with a greasy burger waiting for the first train back to Bristol. And now I live almost within a short taxi ride and they've gone and closed it

Snap! (almost)

I did what you did, Gods, Sundis, Atomic Jam etc. Then sat in Maccy D's in the old Palisades at 6am with a bacon-egg McMuffin meal deal. The only difference for me was I was catching the first train back to Stafford!

P.S. I lived in Bristol for a year (Oct 2000 to Sep 2001). It was all about Slinky @ Creation.

Staying in the Rotunda in Birmingham City centre and I can see this giant bit of waste ground.

For reference, the Bullring shipping centre is in the bottom part of the picture, and the white roofing in the middle of the pic to the right of the church is the market.

Looks like an awful waste of prime ground that's been like that for a while!

Have googled but can't work out what it is.
I stayed at that travel lodge just to the right of the empty space in your photo a couple of years ago and wondered the exact same thing as you :p

Ahhh - Digbeth

I remember it when the road was cobbles and church had grass all round it - Then the open market and the old bombed market with the WW2 bomb on display and slot to put your penny ( a coin that is) in.
The fish market was underneath.

I don't miss Birmingham one little bit - I was born in Ladywood but I think that has now changed colour. :)
