How much nonsense can you turn off to make the interface and menus as close to XP as possible?

I dont have the vocabulary to describe how much i hate Vista and its unnecessary complications of previously simple menus and operations.

Hello Marcos, to make the start menu look more like Windows XP, hover your cursor over the start button and right click and go to "Properties". Once the "Properties" menu has appeared, tick the "Classic Start menu" option. This will now be very similar to that of Windows XPs start menu. You can also click on "Customize", to customize the start menu further.

To get the interface as close to Windows XP as possible, right click anywhere on the desktop and go to the "Personalize" option. Once the "Personalization" window has popped up, click on the top option - "Windows Colour and Appearance". Then select the preferred Theme.

The "Windows Vista Basic" theme will probably be the closes to the Windows XPs interface.

You could also check out the Windows Vista Start Menu Package. :)

Can you explain how that works please?

Ive got an oem version of Vista 64 (uninstalled) and just ordered an oem copy of XP from OCuK because I wanted both o/s on the new PC. (Could i have got the XP for nothing?)

Vistas great if it's just the menus you hate turn them back to xp. Control panel can be set back to classic as well.
That's all I do is turn the menus back to classic and away you go.

How do I get Explorer to look like that in XP? Just installed Vista on a laptop and am getting on fine with it expect for explorer, not too sure if I'll get used to it but I just prefer the version in XP especially the look and the Status bar at the bottom which alway told you how much space was free when you clicked on the drive.

Any New OS will appear to suck as you adapt to new ways of doing things. That is part of the point, unfortunately. I am now used to my Vista install and can navigate around with ease. Which menus do you dislike? A lot of the XP functionality is still there, it just has to be accessed differently.

I think the Vista menus are much better than the old XP setup, but it just takes a little time getting used to them.

When I first installed Vista I also didn't like the menu system, but after a few months I now hate having to use XP menu at work and much prefer the Vista method.

If its a oem copy contact the reseller and get a XP downgrade disk for free!!

This is only available from some OEM's.
Sony are offering this as are Dell on some of their models.
However this is down to the individual OEM - it is not a Microsoft thing and it certainly doesn't apply to all.

Also you cannot run a previous OS under the same license as OEM licenses do not come with any downgrade rights.
With a Retail license you can legally run the previous version of an OS/application under the same license.
For example you could buy Vista Ultimate Retail and use the same license and instead run Windows XP Professional.
However OEM licenses cannot be downgraded.

the problem in my situation is that i have a HP and they are working hard to NOT provide XP support on their new range of laptops

Luckily i got it to work now because some internet angel has done all the hard work of looking through hundreds of drivers and got a working combination. And then was kind enough to put it up on torrents for free download.

I spoke to a Microsoft agent last week, after I had had a free sony viao given to us by sony. It had vista business pre-installed but our software doesn't run on vista so I had to install XP.

Sony didn't support that machine for vista so no downgrade avaiable, but the agent did tell me that a oem copy of vista bus or ult can be downgraded under the orridgal licencing if the manufacturer supports it.

The sentence contruction and spelling is appauling, but you are correct.

Business and Ultimate OEM editions have the same downgrade rights as retail.

Although the sentence construction and spelling is appalling, perhaps you should try learning to spell yourself - for example, you failed to correctly spell 'construction' (you wrote: contruction) and 'appalling' (you wrote: appauling).

If you're going to have pops at people, then at least do so with some sort of style. ;)

The first one was a typo the second was a mistake on my part, but at least my posts are legible and useful within the thread ;)

The spelling and such was bad I know (I'd had a few drinks.......) ;):D
