As per the title I want to hear from people who are fortunate enough to only pay £35 for a whole years road tax.

My girlfriends car costs £180 for a years tax
Even more if she were to pay for two 6 months installments
She drives a 1996 Bubble Shape Rover 216 1.6 litre petrol

We want to replace it with something cheaper to tax, cheaper to run and hopefully cheaper to insure so im trying to compile a list of options

As I understand it the car has to have been built after March 2001 to qualify for the cheaper tax

So far I only know of a handful:

Renault Clio 1.5 Diesel
Toyota Yaris D4D

Are there any petrols that make it into this tax bracket or is it only diesels?
Im not sure if its possible as even a 0.8 litre matiz doesnt make it !!

Thanks peeps

B.

This isnt a car for me its a car for my girlfriend who only wants a car thats cheap to run and gets from A to B. Every penny saved is important, she doesnt readily have £180 to hand to pay the tax or £40 to stick in the tank

Running costs are an issue for some people and do influence buying decissions.

Fox your argument is irrelevant in this circumstance. She doesnt care about 0-60's top speed, fancy toys or even the badge on the front.

The important factors are as already stated cheap running costs and comfort.

P.S. Muban thanks very much for that link, lists all of the cars for me, Cheers bud

Peugeot - 206, 207
Renault - Clio, Modus, Meganne

Vauxhall - Corsa

PETROL

Citroen - C1
Daihatsu - Charade, Sirion
Mitsubishi - i
Peugeot - 107
Smart - Several models
Toyota - Aygo
Vauxhall - Corsa

22 different models to choose from not including the various smarts

No I would not need to take out a loan to buy a new car I would pay in cold hard cash up front.

The badge doesnt matter Fox, A to B as cheap as possible is the aim (economy wise)

I am a car nut lol, as Clarkson puts it every motorhead has to own an Alfa Romeo at least once before they can call themselves an enthusiast and I owned an Alfa 147 and drove it like I stole it !!! The car were discussing here is for my girlfriend.

The Meganne has a 1.5 Diesel, I currently drive a 1.6 Mazda 3 Saloon diesel and the performance vs running costs are great. Easily out strips many cars on the road away from the lights and it cruises beautifully down the motorway.

I find that hard to believe that you not discounting cars based on the badge Fox

Tell me why any car from that list is incapable of going from A to B cheaply ?

Yes its going to cost a pretty penny in the outset to buy a new car but then so is any new car so bang there goes that argument. The difference is if we buy one that is only going to cost us £35 to tax then we save a little bit extra in the long run.

You seem to be arguing that regardless of cost we should buy a car that will pull away from the lights faster and use more fuel when all we want is an A to B cheaply car..... your MAD

£2500 will pick me up a Renault clio 1.5 dci

£450 for isurance
£35 for tax
£25 per month fuel

Total yearly = £785

------------------------

Currently we pay:

£700 for insurance
£180 for tax
£45 per month fuel (It drinks)

Total yearly = £1420

Insurance values taken from actual quotes rounded up
Fuel costs based on my mpg from using my 1.6 Diesel

£635 per year extra for running costs I would rather put towards a newer nicer car. I fail to see what the problem is !!

What figures have you used to arrive at those figures? They don't look right from here.

Well the tax costs are obvious so nothing wrong there

The insurance quotes are actual insurance quotes rounded up a few £'s to a nice round number for ease

And the fuel costs are actual fuel costs. What we are spending now and what it would cost me to do the same miles in my 1.6 diesel

The only figure you could possibly say is wrong is the estimate on what it would cost to do the same in my diesel, a smaller diesel would cost less lol

At no point have I ever said I would not buy a car not in the tax bracket, this thread was purely to find cars that WERE in that tax bracket hence why all those posts ago I asked you to stick on topic... but as usual you cant resist.

I previously owned a Renault clio, built in 2002 never had a problem. Only costs were servicing costs.

Audi A2 1.4 TDI, boring bland but does a MILLION MPG. ~80mpg on the mway driven like a grandad.

I do like the A2' exterior styling but they dont half fetch a premium for the badge, Shame...

EDIT
Fox: I remeber why I stopped reading these forums regularly.... self righteous keyboard warriors. No I dont own the thread, but that doesnt give you the right to crap all over it.

The topic was : For those who pay £35 for a years Tax - What do you drive ?

Not: Fox please tell me why I shouldnt bother having an opinion, and just buy a frigging mondeo !!

To quote myself fox:

"At no point have I ever said I would not buy a car not in the tax bracket, this thread was purely to find cars that WERE in that tax bracket "

So stop trying to make out that Ive said different

Your posting style really gets my goat, you argue points that I dont even care about. You dont stop, you cant resist forcing your own opinions on others when you think there doing something wrong !!

People have different priorities to you, you need to face those facts.

Your even putting words in my mouth as in your previous post.

Is it any wonder that I want you to stop posting irrelevant info in this thread ?

This is not the first occurance of you doing this in my threads, when I was looking for a new car in 2004 you did exactly the same. I was interested in the Alfa Romeo 147 and off you went in your usual way proclaiming why I shouldnt buy the car I wanted and should spend my money on a clapped out old Mondeo just like you had and I should save money.

Yes I could save money but I didnt blooming well want to buy a second hand car I wanted a new one and I wanted a specific one.

YOU started the discussion with you post cmparing a BMW and a Mondeo which had nothing to do with the type of car I wanted in fo on.

Ive been so busy telling you to kindly pee off that I havent bothered replying to the other posters.

So your telling me that Parkers can tell me which cars are in that Tax Bracket ?
Why has it taken you until now to actually contribute the info to the thread ?

Blunt is one way of describing it.

Fox I do understand your point, and no im not totally rulling out buying cars not in the low tax bracket. But can you see that I wanted info on cars that were in it and not what youve been posting ?

Becuase 2 hours ago, saitrix posted a link to a table listing EVERY car with a C02 output of less than 120g/km. That was your original question answered completely and entirely. You've not even bothered to thank him - you are far too engrossed in mauling me for posting my thoughts on the subject of low tax cars :)

Fox, I asked you very early on not to take the thread off topic but you carried on.

I didnt thank saitrix personally because if you look a few posts up Muban offered a very similar link with the same tables on it in a searchable from. saitrix was thanked along with everyone else later on when the thread had run its course.

So why does any of what happened next matter? You got your answer in 100% complete form. We could have then decided to discuss holidaying in Alaska and you'd still have had your question answered.

Because I dont like you and I wont let you win :p - joke

Seriously Fox Ive had enough, thank you for your opinions on the following, I will bear it in mind when compiling a list of cars that I could get in the £35 tax bracket:

How much I am going to spend on a car
How im missing out on other cars with higher running costs
How a less economical car is more fun to drive
Your info on cars that are not in the tax bracket I was interested in
The emissions of BMW's and Mondeos

Really.. thanks :o
