hi guys

Got a force 3 ssd for xmas but only had sata 2 and just wanted to know if these speeds look alright?

I can tell how fast its running as it turns on so fast now and operning programs is almost instant.

I know when loading applicatons and games etc its all about the read speed but like the op here im stuck with sata II on my board and seeing his results at around 280MB/s thats looks pretty good and about spot on from the results i have seen with sata III chipsets hitting 550MB/s. My main question is tho would it be a good upgrade getting an SSD with a sata II setup? I dont know what the top read speeds are with standard mechnical drives but if there is a vast difference i may well treat myself to one

Get a SATA 3 SSD, it'll work just as a SATA 2 one will on a SATA 2 controller when it comes to speeds etc and will benefit if you move to a S3 board in the future. SSD speed dosen't come from the Mb/sec speed as much as it comes from the actual latency, theres almost none and its vastly superior to any mechanical hdd.

Oh right i see i have seen a lot of people mention about poor chipset controllers for ssd's though which was something that put me off a little. I have a fairly old board (in sig) all be it very reliable had it for nearly 3 yrs, im just not to sure what sata controller it has and if its really any good

Your boards controllers are slower than the Intels yes, you'll still see a huge performance increase vs. most any mechanical drive.

I tried numerous sata 2 and sata 3 SSDs on sata 2 and 3 boards. No difference in everyday use apart from benchmarks.

I now use a Intel G2 X25M for os and a M4 for games.
