Force W7 -> W10 upgrades. Not cool MS, not cool.

Actually the 'downloading windows 10' notification you get in windows updates now is a complete lie as all it's doing is downloading and installing the updates you've selected.
 
Well I managed to screw up the updates system and had to follow a convoluted series of instructions to fix it. Now I cannot have any of the security updates without downloading Windows 10, it force selects it every time.
 
Yeah, thanks for the links marc2003, will try them after I've downloaded windows 10 and hopefully avoided installing it.
 
Ive never been forced to install 10, i didn't install those updates that gave you the 'get windows 10 now' icon on the taskbar, and ive got my updates set to, 'check, but let me choose wether to down and install'.
 
I understand people not wanting to install windows 10. I use it on my desktop and it's great but I really can't be bothered to upgrade my laptop yet.

I don't understand people who seem to be upset that it downloaded and installed automatically when their update settings are to download and install updates automatically.

Personally I just hid KB3035583 months ago and that was that.

Most people assume that will be security and feature updates for Windows 7 - not a whole new OS. For people with limited technical abilities and/or using software or hardware that isn't supported under Windows 10 (and that doesn't necessarily stop Windows 10 being auto installed) that is very undesirable.

For instance I support a few older relatives/friends some of whom are a bit intimidated by modern electronics - I like to leave their systems setup so do a certain amount of updating so they aren't left unsecure longer than is necessarily, etc. but when it comes to computers I have to show them the exact path to do everything (often with them taking extensive notes) and they will doggedly hold onto ageing printers and scanners, etc. because they are familiar with how they work - Windows 7 or 8 updating itself to 10 on its own causes a huge amount of stress for them and myself - they are suddenly presented with an entirely alien environment, they don't know if its something they did wrong or their system going wrong or what, etc. and can't do anything on their PC until I've sorted it all out for them - at the end of the day Windows 7 or whatever is more than sufficient for their needs and they can be eased into 10 eventually if needs be in a managed fashion.

And that is just one example of many different scenarios.
 
Oh wow my dad just fell foul of this and he is NOT happy... very NOT happy :S was doing something on his PC and I stopped by to talk about something - we turn around a few minutes later and its sitting there at 15% on the Windows 10 upgrade screen - losing the work he was doing and all.

Gonna be interesting to see what state the system is in once it has done (as he has a lot of older database stuff that almost certainly isn't compatible with 10) - his first comment when we realised what was happening was "Can I turn Windows 10 off?" lol.

Very not cool though.

Yeah thats what I said - just hoping nothing is lost.

Just found out why he is so mad - he was just finishing something for tomorrow (early start) before going to bed and now he can't access it and will have to wait until the update is done - he is not a very happy person right now.

As its a Q6600 with an older mechanical HDD it isn't exactly going very quickly.

EDIT: As an aside he actually quite likes Windows 10 (has a laptop with it on already) but wasn't upgrading the desktop due to the amount of legacy software he uses day to day - kicking myself for not thinking to check what his Windows update settings were on.

just set group policy windows update option to Force Upgrade Windows to Disabled. then you can leave windows update to Auto.

Job Done.

Done on many over 100 workstations running W7 Pro & 20 running Home.

Then just hide KB303558 Update.

i agree its Very bad on MS
 
In a slight twist turns out that within the last week the author of the main software package that he was keeping the PC on 7 for has released an update that makes it work with 10 (it has been pretty much abandonware for the 10-15 years) he hasn't had time to go through the rest though.
