hey . got a dell m1530 with a 160gb 7200rpm fujitsu drive. for some reason though, under the option for enabling write caching on the disc it says this device does not allow its write cache settings to be modified and if i check the box, it just reverts to being unchecked when i open it up again. anyone got any idea why this would be and if there is some way i could force it on.

thanks guys

Yeah do you have the Intel RAID/AHCI Storage Driver installed?

If so that takes over control of such things and it should be enabled by deault.

hey, thanks for your reply. think ive already got it installed. just checked in the bios and ahci is already enabled but still says this device does not allow its write cache settings to be modified. any ideas?

Yes but what I was saying is the Intel driver takes over control from Windows. So it makes no difference what Windows says.

If you open the Intel RAID program you can set the write caching there. The default setting is for it to be switched on.

Check the BIOS, think you might have to change it over to AHCI.

My suggestion would be to run HD Tach or HD Tune with it the way it is now, and see what results you get. Note them down, then change the option above and run the benchmark again. You might find, as I did on my 1330, that performance gets worse.

alright guys, will give that a go. I mean, thing is, am very happy with the performance of the lappy as it is, but thought that that i fi could squeeze a little more snapiness out of it i would
