my 2.0 litre volvo does 30-32mpg no matter what i do to it re load, towing etc. Round town, motorway it doesn't seem to matter that much, 1 or 2 mpg differance max. My mate's Saab 2 litre was the same too.

So i'd guess a 2.0 mondeo would do about 30-35mpg

A few years ago, that would have been about the right price for a 1.8 Gti. They are not fast, but were perfectly acceptable cars.

I found the 1800 Zetec to be significantly less economical than the 2.0 Zetec.

Mine used more oil than petrol!.

Thats because it was a rotary engine

Hmmm i have to say that the escort i sat in years ago didn't seem all that bad? quiet, refined...very rusty....! but theres a lot worse!

I'd agree a mondeo is better value for money for what you get though etc.

1.8L MG ZS - fuel efficient, nice and pretty cheap. Get an older one and you wouldn't be looking too far above the £1,400 mark.

If the size of the mondeo was a problem, you can pick up an early Mk1 1.8 Zetec Focus for this budget too...

i've driven one and its like my crapy 1.3 MK6 but with a bit more power, 2.0 Focus Zetec for 2k would be better if you can stretch that far.

its not a bad car, but for £1400 i wouldnt bother, an escort is only good for a £500 banger, anything more and you will be disappointed

Now this is strange because i felt that they did feel like a barge. Nothing terrible about them but they felt like a big tank, especially on round-abouts at anything over 10mph

I had the 1.8 Si before I got the ST, it was a very nice car, the GTI had leather (or half leather) seats iirc, and was 130 bhp, rather than the 115 of the Si.

It was quick enough around the town, but it was the first car to convince me that speedos are no good after a ton – I had an indicated 135 on a stretch of private road once

I had no problems with either rust or reliability, but it is a Ford, so prepare for both at some point.

Is £1,400 the going rate for these now?

Edit: I see the bodykit was one thing you liked, my Si came with it as a factory option, so they're out there.

However, it felt like a "planted" barge that was well suited to motorway driving or basic A > B stuff.

When I switched over to the Escort, from a Metro GTI (ace car!), the only difference I found about the handling, was it had better suspension, and you can’t say a Metro is a barge – it’s practically a go kart!

From Escort to Mondeo, there was little or no difference, but mine is an ST, so the sports suspension probably helps eliminate the barge feeling, over a standard Mondy.

The whole "barge" thing has always amused me. The only car I've driven that felt like a barge was a LWB Hi-Top Transit with a knackered steering rack

I'm sorry but you're talking rubbish, i wasn't making any reference to it's performance. If it feels like a mondeo or a ZT to you then you shouldn't be allowed to drive anything bigger than a mini.
