Hi all

I am trying to get my Escort back on the road, last time she was started she had black deposits out of the exhaust and was smoking a lot, also the oil smells like petrol and the coolant has a sweet smell to it, which am I correct in thinking HGF? There is no mayo, though.

I don't know too much about engines :(

Thanks in advance :)

That's some good news :)

now just have to repair my rear arch from a neighbour of my fiancée when they hit it, but wouldn't admit it (had enough evidence, well no video/photo but my car had white paint on it, theirs had black :(, meh, I get all filler, primer etc for free) and then fit the alternator belt

thanks all :)

Is it worth putting some Redex in it too?

not really. petrol nowadays is fine unless you leave it for years and years.

i started my race bike up after 14months which uses standard pump fuel and it was fine. :)

octane just drops a little bit. nowhere near as bad as it used to be though.

i believe the opposite is true.
old four star was ok for a long time, but unleaded fuel has a few more volatile components in it to compensate for the lack of lead, and these components evaporate, making the petrol go bad

it used to jellify in a couple of months before. not so now.... :)

ask any motorbike owner and you'll get a truer idea of it as most tend to lay bikes up for winter. before you'd have to drop all the fuel out and run it dry as the petrol would gums jets/injectors up. newer fuel rarely does that. :)

Its only just above red anyways :p

I was thinking more to clean the engine out?

cant hurt if you use it on the fuel system. :)

just aware if you have a fuel filter that stuff like that can clear stuff out great. which then blocks your fuel filter. :)

and i'd avoid using engine flush if you change the oil too.... some older engines have become 'set' by the sludge in the engine a bit and using engine flush actually loosens up a lot of engines. :)

keep the engine oil changed regular on it. :)
