Been having intermittent problems with my car speedo, the speedo dial would intermittently set to 0 but would normally reset it's self and be fine after a gear change or sometimes on it's own accord, I agree I should have sorted it/looked at sooner.

Today however the problem escalated, I got into my car as normal started her up and the speedo was just set at 0 and wasn't budging, then I noticed the car started to judder heavily after coming off the throttle so much so that I turned round and took the car home, the juddering was very noticeable seemed to run rough as a dog. Once I got home I started the car up to park it on the drive and the speedo semed to budge after I had got down the street and seemed to be running OK.

Just wanting to check if this is definitely the VSS and if any other Focus owners have had a similar issue before I go ahead and try a new one, I have also ordered a new coil pack so will be replacing this as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Fed up of the little niggles with this car, I thought the Focus was supposed to be reliable..

My 2001 1.6 did the same cost about £70 inc fitting as the speed senser is right at the back of the gearbox, I think the engine goes into limp home mode.

Other that than nothing else has gone wrong, (touch wood):)

Yep, friend of mine has just had the same sensor replaced - same symptoms.

*Cringes*

The VSS is £22 from Ford my local indy said for me to bring it down and he would charge me a tenner if it was just a ten minute job which I believe it is. Seems to be incredibly fussy job to do after having a look about so if my independent will do it for £10 I may as well.

Managed to get hold of the parts.

Took the car to a local trustworthy independant to have the work done.

Total cost was £40 (Was going to be cheaper but apparantly the VSS was a fiddly job and took a while) to fit the VSS and Coil Pack (I supplied parts)

Not bad really when Ford wanted 120+ quid

is it all sorted tho now mate? :)

Well yea should be will have to give it a few weeks to see if the speedo problem crops up but that new sensor will of sorted it, the car is less rough now in low revs around town thanks to the new coil pack.

My VSS went about a month after I bought the car. The only problem I ever had was the speedo dropping out, never the juddering and sometimes cutting out others seem to have experienced. It was covered under the 3 month warranty though, so I took it back...was assured that the part was about ~£20 and literally a 15 minute job....

...2 and a half hours later, they finally got it changed :D It's in a tough spot at the rear of the gearbox....it was OK to get to with the car up on the ramp, but was wedged in so tight that it took them ages of exertion just to prise out the securing pin. Luckily, I didn't have to pay a penny due to being covered by the warranty.

What other problems are you having then? My Focus has been brilliant, the only real cost to me has been servicing and changing the gear lever return spring. Im really impressed with the reliability. It's probs because you've got a poncy facelift :D

Just been cleaning/examining the old coil. Noticed a nice crack just under point 1.

Could have been the reason that it was running rough now and then and sometimes had starting issues.

Pff

No major problems just little niggles. Problem is, the engine is Japanese/Chinese sigma, reliable as hell. Yet everything else is Ford...

Do you have MSN Conscript, could do with chatting to another clued up Focus owner :).
