Anyone got any thoughts on them, ive been looking at replacing my ageing A3 with nearly 200k on the clock, i need more ground clearance, i tow a lot and part-time 4wd would be handy too.

Ideally i'd like a disco 3 but the other half says no, and a freelander 2 is just too pricey.

Is it a diesel youre after? What about a Nissan Murano? Can get them for around 10k these days. Nice engine, 4WD, well specced and I think they look pretty good.

Kuga is basically a Focus floor pan, its good on the road, but it isnt really suited to off road, they actually do a 2wd version! How about a CRV.

I thought that they were all V6 3.5 petrol?

I'd agree with other comments, the Kuga is just a jumped up Focus and the X-Trail is a very capable car

Got to be diesel
Got to be capable of carrying the family (wife + 1 kid currently....more later!)
Must be capable of handling the muddy/stony/rutted/rubbish tracks to work and back
Must be good for towing (boat trailers + car trailer witth comp car @ 3tonnes)

I'll take a peek at the other suggestions that fit the criteria, but was generally wondering about the kuga specifically???

Diesel Subaru Forrester?

Should be exactly what your after :)

Otherwise have a look at Landcruisers:cool:

I'm sure the Kuga would be perfectly capable of fulfilling your criteria. Its hardly hardcore off-roading you're after.

The Kuga won't be good for towing stuff that big - its got quite a short wheelbase and it probably isn't rated anywhere near a 'proper' 4x4 for towing weight.

Well, the Horse shows I have attended big/small go to show that something like the Kuga is very unsuitable for pulling that kind of load. The main choice is Land/Range Rover or the Mitsu Shogun. As the families get bigger you see a lot of L200/Navaras and then the full blown 7.5 ton horse box/lorry.

I persoanlly would be looking at the Subrau Forester. New diesel Subrau engines are meant to be pretty good (if they put them in the Forester that is) and they are no longer Impreza based but still just as capable as a road/offroad vehicle with decent luxaries and comfort.

The kuga can pull that kind of load - my A3 can pull it ;)

Bug one is right, i dont need hard-core offroading, i'll leave that to my comp car which is designed for the job!

Not sure about shogun and the likes as they are so big and thirsty, if i was to go that size there would be no quesiton it would be the class leading Disco 3 which whoops the others in all situations!

Surely the forrester isnt any more capable than a kuga, possibly less so?

I would look at the driveshafts on a 4wd Kuga. Comedy thin comes to mind when I saw them. No way is that a 3 tonne tow car.

What he said. You're comapring a decent 2WD car to a poor 4WD car in terms of design and quality.

You'll probably be fine. My other halfs family use an N reg Range Rover HSE V8 for towing Horse boxes and the like so I can't really comment on new stuff.

I like the look of the kuga and theres now finally an automatic option, initially it was manual only.

Fith gear has a video review of it, the lower ground clearence doesn't do it any favours later in this vid
