If you fancy going back a few years: Les Diaboliques. And please G*d stay away from the awful Hollywood remake. All the others I can think of quickly have already been listed.

solid thread to be fair, gunna take you a while to go through everything though! should probably of asked for peoples favourites or them to name just one and a description :p
 
First one you should watch out of any you've been recommended is Week End by Jean Luc Goddard.
 
I would reccomend brotherhood and also the indian film three idiots (its worth a watch even for western audiences)

Nothing like throwing someone in at the deep end. However, if you plan to actually like foreign films I'd leave Goddard until quite a lot later.

Worth watching regardless of the circumstance. Counter cinema is pretty interesting to watch, if only to show a different side to cinema.

It'd be silly to "dislike" foreign films on the basis of, well, anything really. Certainly a lot of Goddard's stuff is deliberately unlikeable, but still vital to any film fan, I feel.

True, but people do exactly that sort of irrational thing. You'll notice I didn't say don't watch Godard, I said leave him until later. If nothing else it puts his work in perspective. If someone was new to reading you wouldn't start them with Joyce.

I understand your point, and I'm well aware that you said leave him to later as opposed to don't watch him at all. But I think it would be an interesting watch for anyone regardless of what their taste is.
 
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Der Untergang (Downfall) about the last days of the Bunker in WW2, excellent performances all round.
