Foreign owners want to end Premier League relegation...

If Wigan were allowed to remain in the Premier League ahead of say Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday / United, Nottingham Forest or even Leicester, West Ham I think part of me would die.

Well as I said you'd obviously kick out the 'riff-raff' (inflammatory phrase deliberately chosen for effect without directing it at a specific club) first, cut it down to 16 teams with the focus being on money, who will be the biggest draw. Realistically I'd say the big 8 are pretty much a given:

Arsenal
Villa
Man City
Man United
Liverpool
Everton
Chelsea
Spurs

Then you'd look at some other sides and say they've either got a big support or have done enough in recent years:

Newcastle
Stoke
Fulham
Sunderland
Bolton

So that's 13 clubs, then it's a question of Leeds, Forest, West Ham competing against a range of other clubs including some in the Prem, probably Blackburn you'd give the nod considering they've been Champions of the EPL before.
Looking at that list I'm not overly happy with it, there's some teams in there that I'm not convinced would be a big long-term asset to the league in terms of what they will deliver year-in, year-out, although maybe without relegation they would get enough cash to improve and pull away from the quality in the lower leagues.

lol what a ridiculous idea, so basically if i bought the worst team in the EPL for lets say £100 million. i could sell all of its players to recoup a lot of that £100 million back, then field 11 pub team players every week and offer them zero wages but a chance to play against the likes of drogba and gerrard, etc. then just take my many millions in advertising/sponsorship/tv money and stick it straight into my bank account. it doesnt matter if the team loses every game 20-0 because within 10 years i will have made over £200 million profit easy. i dont need to fear losing because i will never get relegated.

You always have weird and wonderful ideas to get around various rules & regulations, whether it's this or ffp.

Unfortunately your brilliant scheme wouldn't work as if you weren't competitive you'd lose your franchise/license/membership or whatever they decide to call it.

I believe Villa have said they're surprised by Bevan's claims that foreign owners are behind this and as good as asked him to prove it.

Of course the Venkys are against the proposal, they are bottom of the league so the most likely team to get relegated before any change to the rules could come into affect - they will want a chance to get promoted back in should they go down.

The most likely (and I stress most likely, as I'm a bit dubious about this mysterious list of foreign owners that supposedly want to scrap relegation) ones I can think of would be somebody like Arsenal, a fading giant with a big wage bill for whom relegating would be a disaster, majority shareholder is from the US so used to the model over there.

One of the worst things with the league up here, is the lack of promotion/relegation. One team up/down just leads to a very stale league.

People always go on about how only 2 teams ever win our league, but the same has been true at the top of the Premiership for a long time too. IMO, it's the lack of promotion/relegation that is the biggest difference.

Part of the reason the Championship is so interesting, is that for much of the season, there can be as many as 8 or 9 teams in with a realistic chance of a promotion spot. The Premiership then benefits from the fact that these new teams bring something different to the league, even if it's unlikely that the teams will stay up for more than a season or two.

Change is good, competition is good. Removing promotion and relegation would remove so much interest in football in this country.

Just this! The champ would have to become the new top league (or at least get Europe places) as it would be come the defacto top competitive league in england....

Wouldn't want to be a part of a prem league that has no competition to stay in.

This won't be possible anyway, from what I've heard even if the 14 clubs agree to it the FA can just veto it.

It's nothing but a few of the bottom club owners scheming to secure long term profits anyway, nothing to do with making the league better because if anything they will let the squad rot and pocket all of the money widening the gap from top to bottom.

If the same people pushing for it were told that they would have to go into a playoffs to secure a spot in this new permanent Premier League they would suddenly be dead against it because temporary relegation is preferable to being locked out of the top tier for good.
