You see so many of these around at the moment, do they all pay roadtax I wonder?

Whats to stop UK drivers sticking some German/Spanish plates on the car and saving £ hundreds a year.

Its not like the Road tax goes on the roads, its probably paying for the gold that Gordon Brown sold.

Who?

No, its a genuine question.

I mean what evidence would the police have that you are not foreign.

I see all these Polish cars, so lets assume no tax, and no UK licence, which means they would have no UK insurance. They can drive for free ??

they (should) hold and meet tha valid driving requirements of the home country and that of the EU and all subsequent costs from the country their car is registered in

as for your status, unless you mess them about with loads of false info that will get you arrested, a quick name search and dob will show up your DVLA records, your NI, criminal record (if applicable) etc, the government does keep databases on people you know ;)

Police would not have to prove it though. You however would need to prove you are a resident abroad.

What happens is that if someone from the council/dvla/police etc see a foreign plate, they note it down and if it is spotted 6 months later they get towed/fined and made to get a tax disc.

AHhhhhh. That answers it. I wonder if its retrospective or whether they end up with a years free tax.

That would not work. what if you came to the UK for a day trip in January and again in July?

Well thats how it works, i imagine if you have been spotted twice 6 months apart its for you to prove you were out of the country i.e. ferry tickets etc.
