Next week I've got to be at an important event and will need to dress up smart casually. Therefore I will need a long sleeve formal shirt to go with my suit trousers, however I've no idea where the best places are for shirts. Does anyone know any shirts that are high quality and possibly slim fitting (as I'm tall & lanky build).

Also, can somebody describe cufflinks for me, as I've seen them around but no idea how they work?

I'm willing to spend up to ~£40 a shirt if that helps. :)

Aye Burton Topman and Next do some pretty good deals. I even bought a shirt tie combo at Tesco for £8, and I got to say it's not bad at all.

Though ideally, if you want something totally plush with cufflinks go and get something tailored ;)

If you don't want some shiny monstrosity from Next then the best places to go for cheap, good quality shirts are department stores (Fenwicks, John Lewis etc) and Marks & Spencers. I don't think that I've ever been in a Burton's so I couldn't tell you about that.

Cufflinks are what you wear to, well, link your cuffs when you have a double-cuffed shirt. The shirt doesn't have buttons on the cuffs, it has slits that you put cufflinks through to hold the cuff together. Looks a lot smarter than button-cuff shirts as long as you don't have tacky cufflinks (by which I mean cartoons, England flags or anything novelty).

Tailored shirts are all very well, but you're not going to find a decent one for £40.

Ah cheers, I think I'll go for double cuffs as I reckon they look smarter.

I'll check Next and Marks & Spencers out, as I've just visited their websites and they have some nice examples. :)

Good choice. I just bought quite a lot of clothing/household things from them and am very pleased with everything.

If you know your collar and sleeve size, take a look at http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/broom their slim fit 'Sea Island Quality' shirts are at the upper end of your price range, but are far nicer than anything you'll find in M&S etc.

If you really want to impress, take a look at the ‘180s’ range, they are absolutely amazing and if you wear a decent suit, definitely worth the extra money.

Hawes and Curtis, Marks and Spencers, River Island and maybe Next. Wouldn't recommend Burtons personally, can get better quality elsewhere in my experience. May as well buy something that will last.

Unless you actually want to, you won't need an amazing shirt with cuff-links etc for smart-casual - suit and shirt without tie is what I would be expecting, probably.

Debenhams sell some nice shirts but just shop around, really. If there is a tailor near you with shirts and things, go and have a look - you'll be surprised how cheap they are.

You cant really go wrong with M&S.

Ive just got a really nice shirt with a slight herring bone pattern from 'The shirt shop' in York. It has buttons, but also takes cuff links which is quite nice.
