Format drive to use

Apologies if this subject has been covered elsewhere, I've had a look through and most of it has gone over my head.

I have two external drives with my data backed up on, when I put them into the USB to connect to my PC they're now saying I have to format them to use them, which I obviously don't want to do. Is there any way I can access them at all?

What were the drives plugged into before?

My PC. I've used them as storage. The latest one kept making the plug in sound that you get when you plug it in but then it was making the unplug sound and that plug in again etc etc

Were you using USB extension cables, or the ones that came with the drive? External hard drives can have issues with cables, because of the power limits on the ports.
