Format for Ubuntu

Hi Guys

Me and a friend are having a play with a few old computers and want to put Ubuntu on one of them. How do we need to format the disks in preparation for putting Ubuntu on them, or is this carried out automatically by the Ubuntu installer?

The installer takes care of the appropriate formatting before installation either via partitioning or formatting the whole disk.

I use Gparted as I don't like any installer I have used on a distro CD.

Is Gparted bootable?

Yep, think it can boot from CD or USB flash drives.
