I have been given an old IDE HDD for my PC whilst the 7200.11 is out of action, but the problem is I can't format the drive. It uses an ext3 file system & I'm an IDE n00b, so thats a bit pants to start with...

So far I've used ubuntu, vista and a KILLDISK DOS app, none of them like formatting the hard-drive. Any ideas why and any solutions?? I'm an IDE n00b..
System is down there... v

Can u see it in the computer management console. Right-click the taskbar, properties, start-menu tab, check classic menu and customise, tick checkbox > display administrative tools. Browse programs from start menu. Administritive tools > computer management > disk management. If the disk is shown there then u can "delete partition" and then format it in NTFS.

An easier route would be to right click "My computer" / "Computer" and click manage, then click disk management.

ext3
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ext3 or third extended filesystem is a journaled file system that is commonly used by the Linux kernel. It is the default file system for many popular Linux distributions. Stephen Tweedie first revealed that he was working on extending ext2 in Journaling the Linux ext2fs Filesystem in 1998[2] paper and later in a February 1999 kernel mailing list posting[3] and the filesystem was merged with the mainline Linux kernel in November 2001 from 2.4.15 onward.[4] Its main advantage over ext2 is journaling which improves reliability and eliminates the need to check the file system after an unclean shutdown. Its successor is ext4.

Can't you just download the drives manufacturers testing software? This can be booted from bios and format the drive, after that Vista should see the drive during installation.

What exactly happened? I've used GParted in Ubuntu to format ext3 drives before and had no problems.

It got to 5% and said partitioning section 0:0:0 or somthing like that for about ten mins or so and then said Failed

I would but I can't see any matxor drivers suitable??

May be it's read-only?? Would that be one reason??

Maxtor was acquired by Seagate, so Seatools for DOS would format it.

Anyway, anyone know where I can get the 7200.11 fixed for a reasonable price?? I'm not covered by warranty. Boo!!!!!

Strange, it should have done. Tbh, hard drives are so cheap that you might as well just buy a new one.

How come it's not covered by the warranty? Should have at least 3 years.
