Formatting MBR

Not sure if this should be in hard drives or windows forum.

Is it possible to format the MBR on a hard drive while it is plugged in as slave in another computer?

The computer it is meant for doesn't have a working floppy drive to use a boot disk.

Any easy way to format it without faffing about with floppys?

Ok nevermind that, I had to dig out a win98 floppy and used that.

But now I have a problem, after formatting the mbr, when I go to install xp it detects the CD then says "setup is checking your hardware" then seconds later the screen goes black and the PC is frozen (num lock light froze etc).

Any ideas?
