can steam be directly copied and used on a new system of windows, i.e. does it have ties with the registry or not?

Just backup the steam apps folder. Install steam on the new pc and move the steamapps folder back.

Or right click in my games menu, 'backup game files'

yep do what the above person said

or use the steam back up feature you can eaither move the backup then to other drive or set it up so that back up is split up so they can fit on multi cds/dvds

you don't even need to reinstall Steam

I keep Steam on my D:\ drive, and when I reinstall Windows, I just open the ol' Steam.exe

It'll register a service, which takes one second, then you're good to go.

No need to backup or reinstall anything

Same. I have games on D:\ and Windows on C:\. Didn't need to reinstall any of my games when i went from XP to Vista.

But i thought some games used the registry for stuff, or are you just talking about steam?

I have a few games as well as steam and they all work fine. Obviously there are no Start Menu shortcuts, but thats easily solveable. Not had any problems so far.
