try get into recovery console then
CHK DSK/P
FIXBOOT
FIXMBR

I did chkdsk /r I think it was and it found one or more errors on the disk, not sure what they are.

And i'll have a go at those when i'm out of my strop of last night :p

Oh, little faces are back, they look small

chk dsk/p should detect and FIX any disk problems
probally all you need but usually use the other 2 as well(however i can`t be held responsible if your disk gets fubared)

Well i've done those three and now doing a full fomat on a 320GB HD, this could take a while :o

Edit: Okay, finally finished the full format after 1-2hours, Windows setup files were copied over and the computer rebooted.

try this..

copy your xp disc to C:\xpcd

download and run nlite www.nliteos.com
set xpcd as the working directory

integrate SP2 into the disc if it doesn't have it already

download and extract this.. http://bleddyn.co.uk/temp/legacy.zip
put it in C:\drivers or something (extracted)

then select driver integration + make iso options

choose 'multiple drivers' select the files it finds, choose choose textmode driver, select both drivers (they'll say they are both required anyway)

next, complete tasks etc, in the iso screen, choose direct burn, put a blank cdr in and it'll make an xp disc with the drivers on :)

i think it uses that driver i said since it has an nforce 4 chipset

or you could use this tool to put a load of extra sata/raid drivers in (to be sure it gets it!) http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=85842

you'll still need to copy the files to C:\xpcd first tho, and use nlite to make a bootable xp disc (easiest way to do it)

could be reason I got this error?

ok i think i know why you get this error.
i have 3 drives, 1 ide with my current windows install on, 1 ide which is ext3 and 1 sata which is partitioned - the new windows install will go on one of these.

i started by disconnecting just the first ide drive (the windows one) and tried installing windows on the sata drive. it saw the drive all was good, however when i chose the disk it said

"need to write setup/boot info to ide disk0 but it is in a format windows doesn't recognise"

so i think that you need all the drives in so that windows can write start up info to the ide drives if you are using ide and sata together.

so my suggestion is: partition your new disk so you have a place to install windows and a place for your data. backup all your data to this drive. then install windows to the sata drive LEAVING the current ide drive connected.

how you want to backup your data is up to you and im not even sure it will be necessary. windows wont overwrite your current setup but will write boot data to the disk pointing to the sata drive i think.

anyway i am just about to try again with some ntfs partitions on my ide drives so the boot data can be written.

good luck

I think I have had this problem myself with both sata and ide hdd's installed in a machine. What i did to get over it was to turn off the hard drives in the bios itself then boot up using the win xp cd. The ide hard drives were still detected when asked what drive to install to, but the order they appeared were different.

Maybe you could try that?
